Sharpen Image – AI Unblur and Fix Blurry Photos

Add a blurry or soft picture to the box above and this tool will sharpen image detail in your browser, with a live before-and-after preview of the centre of the picture. Pick a method or leave it on Auto, set the Strength, and press the button. You get a crisper file at the same size, or enlarged two or four times, and a sharpness score that shows how much clearer it became.

Everything runs on your own device. Your photos are opened, processed and saved by the browser, and nothing is uploaded to a server. JPG, PNG, WebP, HEIC photos from iPhones and AVIF work, and most browsers also open GIF and BMP files.

Knowing why a picture is blurry helps you pick the right method. Soft focus happens when the camera focused on the wrong spot, for example on the background behind a face. The blur is round and even, and Fix focus is made for exactly that kind.

Camera shake comes from a moving hand during a slow shot, often indoors or at night. A small shake looks like soft focus and can be fixed well; a large shake leaves double edges or long streaks, which no method can fully undo. Motion blur from a moving subject, such as a running child or a passing car, behaves the same way.

Compression is the most common cause today. Messaging apps and social networks shrink photos and save them with strong JPG compression, which smears fine detail into blocks. Old phone cameras, digital zoom and screenshots of photos add to it. Here AI unblur usually helps most, because it was trained on exactly this kind of damage.

Scans and photos of documents are often soft because the paper was not flat, the light was poor or the phone was too far away. Text & documents raises the contrast of letters and cleans the paper, which matters more for reading than true detail.

Finally, some pictures only look soft because they are small. Shown larger on a screen or in print, every pixel becomes visible. Then enlarging with 2× (HD) or 4× (4K) while sharpening gives a better result than sharpening alone.

It can stay free because your own phone or computer does the work, so there is no server time to pay for and no queue. Once the page and, for AI unblur, the model have loaded, the tool keeps working even on a slow connection.

AI unblur uses Real-ESRGAN, an open model that was trained on many pairs of sharp and degraded photos. It learned what fine texture such as hair, brick, leaves and fabric usually looks like, and it redraws that texture where a picture has gone soft. That is why you can sharpen image AI free here without sending your photo to anyone.

The model file is about 5 MB. It is downloaded once when you first use AI unblur, then your browser keeps it, so the first picture takes a little longer. It runs on your device with WebGPU when your browser and graphics chip support it, and otherwise on the processor with WebAssembly, which is slower but works everywhere.

The model works at four times the size, in small tiles so memory stays low, and the progress bar shows how far it is. Photos above about 2.4 megapixels are first halved, because the blur is smaller there and the model rebuilds the detail on the way back up. Photos above about 9.6 megapixels are too big for the model in a browser, so they get Fix focus instead.

Strength works with AI too: at 100% you get the model's result alone, and lower values blend it with the original. If the AI look seems too strong for a portrait, try 60 to 80%.

Fix focus is the way to unblur image online free when a photo is soft as a whole, for example when the camera focused a little behind your subject or moved slightly during a slow shot. Instead of only boosting edges, it treats the blur as a known spreading of light and runs that process backwards.

Technically it is Richardson–Lucy deconvolution with a Gaussian blur model. It starts with your photo as a guess, blurs the guess, compares it with the real photo and corrects the guess where they differ. After several rounds the guess is a sharper version of the picture. The tool works on brightness only and puts the change back into the colours, so edges get crisper without coloured fringes.

By default the tool measures the blur for you (Detect the blur size automatically). To set it yourself, untick that box and set Blur size to roughly how blurry the picture is. A slightly soft photo needs 1 to 1.5 px; a clearly blurred one 2 to 3 px. Too low a value does little, too high a value gives rings and hard edges, so check the preview while you move the slider.

When you unblur image AI free with the AI unblur method, the result can show texture that Fix focus cannot bring back, because the model draws it from what it learned. Fix focus, on the other hand, only works with what is really in the picture, so it never adds anything that was not there.

As a rule of thumb, choose AI unblur for small, compressed or old photos, pictures from messaging apps and screenshots of photos. Choose Fix focus for larger photos that are only slightly out of focus, and for pictures where every detail must stay true, such as evidence photos or product shots. Try both on the live preview; it only takes a moment.

Output size has three choices: Same size, 2× (HD) and 4× (4K). Same size keeps the width and height of the original. 2× and 4× sharpen and enlarge in one go, which helps when a small photo has to be both bigger and clearer. Very large results are limited to about 64 megapixels so the browser does not run out of memory. If you only want to enlarge, Upscale Image is made for that.

The live preview shows the centre of the first picture at actual pixels, up to 420 by 420, with the method that was used. It updates a moment after you change a setting. Drag the slider across it to see the original on the left and the result on the right.

After saving, each file in the list shows its size, the method used and, at Same size, a sharpness score such as sharpness +45%. The score compares how strongly the brightness changes from pixel to pixel before and after, the same kind of measure cameras use for autofocus. It is a useful guide, but trust your eyes too: a very high number can also mean too much grain.

Under More options you can choose the Format: Same as original, JPG, PNG or WebP, and the JPG / WebP quality from 60 to 100, default 92. Same as original saves PNG, GIF and BMP pictures as PNG, WebP as WebP, and other photos as JPG. Reset these options brings everything back to the defaults.

To sharpen image to read text, choose Text & documents. It raises the local contrast of letters strongly, darkens the ink and, with Clean the paper to white, lifts gray and shadowed paper to white. Auto picks this method by itself for screenshots and scans, because they have large flat areas and only a few colours.

Small text needs more pixels. If the letters are only a few pixels tall, set Output size to 2× (HD) so each letter gets more room, then raise Strength. For photos of signs, menus or number plates of your own car, AI unblur at 2× can also help.

If you then want the words as editable text, Image to Text reads them from the sharpened file. Clear, dark letters on white paper give much better results there.

To unblur image text on a receipt, a whiteboard, a page photographed at an angle or a blurry screenshot, start with Text & documents at Strength 80% to 100%. Crop the picture to the text first with Crop Image, so the paper evens out better and the preview shows the part that matters.

Faded thermal receipts and pencil notes gain a lot from the darker ink. For coloured paper, sticky notes or forms with coloured boxes, untick Clean the paper to white so the colours stay. To turn several sharpened pages into one document, Scan to PDF or Image to PDF puts them on pages.

Prints show softness more than screens, because a photo is seen larger and closer. To sharpen image for printing, decide the print size first. A print at 300 DPI needs about 1200 pixels for every 10 cm; if your photo has fewer, use 2× (HD) or 4× (4K) together with the sharpening.

Ink spreads a little on paper, so a print can take a bit more sharpening than looks ideal on screen. Use Sharpen with Amount around 120% to 150% and Radius 1 to 2 px for photos, or Fix focus if the photo is truly soft. Save as PNG or JPG at quality 95 or higher, and set the print size in the file with Change DPI if your print shop asks for it.

Good sharpening is hard to notice; bad sharpening shows white halos along edges, crunchy grain and skin that looks like sandpaper. To sharpen image quality without that look, start low and raise Strength until the picture looks clear, then step back a little.

For portraits, use Sharpen with Threshold 4 to 8, so skin stays smooth while eyes and hair get crisper, or AI unblur at a lower Strength. For noisy night photos, keep Noise reduction at 50% or more with Fix focus. Always judge the result at actual size: the live preview shows real pixels, so it is the best place to check.

Every method works on brightness and keeps the colours, so you will not get the coloured fringes some editors add. JPG files are saved at quality 92 by default; for files that will be edited again, PNG keeps everything without loss.

Change settings clears the results so you can try another look on the same batch without adding the files again. AI unblur on many large photos takes time on a phone; a computer with a graphics chip is much faster.

Sharpening can only work with what the camera captured. No tool can recover detail that is fully destroyed. Heavy motion blur, where a whole subject is smeared across many pixels, a face that is only a few pixels wide in a low-resolution photo, and text far too small to have been recorded cannot be brought back to what they really were.

AI unblur can make such pictures look clearer, but it does so by inventing plausible detail. A tiny face may come out as a believable face that is not quite the real person, and blurred letters may turn into the wrong letters. Do not rely on AI results as proof of what a picture shows, such as a number plate or a document number.

Areas that someone blurred or pixelated on purpose, for privacy, are meant to stay hidden, and this tool is not made for revealing them. Please only work on pictures you are allowed to edit, and respect the privacy of others. If you want to hide something yourself, Blur Image and Pixelate Image do that.

On iPhone and iPad, open the page in Safari or another browser, tap Select images and pick from Photos or Files; HEIC photos work directly. Results go to Downloads in the Files app, and Share or Save Image moves them into Photos. On Android, pick from the gallery, and files land in Downloads.

On Windows, Mac, Linux and Chromebook, any current browser works. Recent versions of Chrome and Edge usually have WebGPU, which makes AI unblur much faster. The ZIP opens with the built-in tools of every system.

Your pictures are read, processed and saved by your browser, and nothing is sent to our server: no file, no preview, no copy. The AI model is downloaded to your device and runs there. That makes the tool fine for family photos, ID scans and work documents.

Saved files contain the picture only. Camera details, dates and location from the original are not copied in. To clean an original photo as well, Remove Metadata does that.

Each picture is opened by the browser, turned the right way up and drawn onto a canvas at the output size. Fix focus, Sharpen and Text & documents run in a background worker on the brightness of every pixel, so the page stays responsive. AI unblur sends the picture through the Real-ESRGAN model in tiles and scales the result to the size you chose. The canvas is then saved as JPG, PNG or WebP.
