Pictures often show more than we mean to share. A street photo holds the faces of strangers, a car photo shows the number plate, and a screenshot of a chat shows names, phone numbers and the messages of other people.

Hiding those details before you post protects the people in the picture and protects you. Many people simply do not want their face online, children should not be shown without their parents agreeing, and a visible address, ticket code or bank detail can be misused.

Blurring is also a matter of taste. A soft background makes the person stand out, a blurred busy corner draws the eye to what matters, and a softened photo makes a calm backdrop for text on a slide or a wallpaper.

To blur image online free, all you need is a browser. Open this page on a computer, tablet or phone, add the picture, mark the parts and download the result. There is nothing to install and no account to make.

In the Parts I mark and Whole picture modes, the picture never leaves your device. The page loads once, and then your own browser reads the pixels, softens the marked parts and saves the new file. That keeps private photos private and makes the work quick.

Your settings are remembered in this browser, so the next time you open the page the mode, effect and strength you used last are already chosen.

The finished pictures carry no FlipMyFormat mark and are not made smaller for free users. What you see in the preview is what you download, at the same width and height as the original.

To blur part of image files, keep the mode on Parts I mark and drag on the picture. Each drag adds one mark, and you can add as many as you need: three faces, a number plate and a house number can all be hidden in one go.

Choose Box for straight-edged things such as a plate, a name tag, a document or a screen. Choose Oval for faces and heads, because an oval follows their shape and leaves less of the background softened around them.

Undo removes the last mark, and Clear marks removes all marks on the current picture. When you have several pictures, each picture keeps its own marks: click a picture in the row of thumbnails, mark it, then move on to the next. A small number on each thumbnail shows how many marks it has.

Only pictures with at least one mark are saved in this mode, so you can add a whole set, mark the few that need it and leave the others alone.

Because the work is done by your own device, you can blur part of image online free with no limit on the number of marks and no wait in a queue. Marking a picture takes a few seconds, and saving it is usually instant on a computer.

To blur image with brush strokes, choose the Brush tool and paint over the area with your mouse or your finger. A brush is the right choice for shapes that are not boxes or ovals, such as a tattoo, a crowd at the edge of a photo, a line of handwriting that runs across the page, or a sign at an angle.

The Brush slider sets the brush size from 1 to 15, as a share of the picture's width, so a stroke looks the same in the preview and in the full-size file. Use a small brush for fine detail and a large one to cover wide areas quickly. Each stroke counts as one mark, so Undo removes the last stroke.

You can mix tools on one picture: a box over the plate, an oval over a face and a few brush strokes over a sign. All the marks are softened together when you save.

To blur face in photo online free, use the Oval tool and drag an oval around each face. Make the oval a little larger than the face itself, so that hair, ears and the edge of the chin are covered too.

Please note that this page does not find faces on its own. There is no automatic face detection: you mark each face by hand. That takes a few seconds per face, and it means you decide exactly which faces are hidden and which are kept, for example keeping your own family sharp and hiding the strangers behind them.

To blur image background and keep the person sharp, choose Background (keep the person) and press Find the person. The result looks like the portrait mode on a phone camera: the subject stays crisp and everything behind them becomes soft.

Finding the person is the one step that does not happen in your browser. In this mode the picture is sent to our own background-removal service, which works out where the person is and sends back an outline. The picture is deleted from the service as soon as the outline has been made. The outline is then used in your browser to soften everything outside the person.

This gives the cleanest result with one or two people in clear view, against a background that is not the same colour as their clothes. Pets and objects can work too, but people give the most reliable outline. If you want to remove the background instead of softening it, use Remove Background.

Whole picture softens every pixel. It is handy for a calm background behind text on a slide, a social media post or a phone wallpaper, and for a teaser of a picture you do not want to show in full yet.

Strength controls how strong the softening is. Around 10 to 25 gives a gentle, dreamy look; 50 and above leaves only colours and shapes. Whole picture runs fully in your browser, like Parts I mark.

Blur softens the marked area so details melt into each other. It looks natural and calm and suits faces, backgrounds and anything you want to tone down rather than cut out.

Pixelate turns the area into large square blocks of colour, the look often used for faces on the news. It makes clear to the viewer that something was hidden on purpose. The same Strength slider sets the size of the blocks.

Solid colour paints over the area with one colour of your choice, black by default. Nothing of the original shows through, which makes it the safest choice for text, numbers, codes and signatures.

Under More options, Edges sets how the effect meets the rest of the picture. Soft edges fade the effect out gently, which looks more natural on photos. Sharp edges stop the effect exactly at the border of your mark, which suits boxes over documents and screens.

A light blur looks good but does not always hide the content. Large, high-contrast text can still be guessed through a weak blur, and a familiar face can still be recognised from its shape and colours. Pixelation with small blocks has the same weakness.

So, for anything that must stay private, use a strength of 60 or more, or use Solid colour, which leaves nothing behind. Cover the whole item with some margin: a plate, a full line of text, the whole face including hair.

Once you save, the file contains only the changed pixels. The saved file cannot be un-blurred: the original details are not hidden somewhere inside it. Keep your original picture in a safe place if you may need it later, and share only the blurred copy.

Add up to 50 pictures at once. In Whole picture mode they are all softened in the same way with one press of the button. In Parts I mark mode, click through the thumbnails and mark each picture; only the pictures with marks are saved.

In Background mode each picture is sent to the service to find the person, one after another, so a batch takes a little longer. You can follow the progress under the button. When the batch is done, download all pictures together in one ZIP.

To blur image iphone users do not need an extra app. Open this page in Safari or any other browser on the iPhone, tap the box and choose pictures from your library. Drag with your finger on the picture to mark the parts, or paint with the Brush.

Press the button, then tap Download. A single picture is saved to Downloads in the Files app; several pictures come as a ZIP that Files opens with a tap. From there you can save them to your photo library or share them.

Pictures from the iPhone photo library are usually handed to the page as JPG, so they work like any other picture. The steps are the same on an iPad and on Android phones. Zoom the page out a little if the picture is large, so you can see all of it while you mark.

Before you share a screenshot of a chat, it is kind to hide the names, numbers and profile pictures of the other people in it. To blur image for whatsapp sharing, add the screenshot, mark each name and number with a Box, choose Solid colour or a strong blur, and save.

The tool never shrinks your pictures. A photo of 4000 × 3000 pixels comes back as 4000 × 3000 pixels, and everything outside your marks keeps its original detail.

Under More options, Format offers Same as picture, JPG and PNG. Same as picture keeps a JPG as JPG and saves other formats as PNG. JPG is saved at a quality of 92 by default; the Quality slider goes from 60 to 100. PNG is lossless, so every unmarked pixel stays exactly as it was.

File names get -blurred added before the extension, such as street-blurred.jpg, so the new copies never get mixed up with the originals. An animated GIF becomes a still picture of its first frame.

Photo details such as EXIF, including the camera model, the date and any GPS location, are not copied into the new files. That is often welcome for pictures you share. To strip those details without changing the picture itself, use Remove Metadata.

Keep your original pictures in one folder and never overwrite them. Add the pictures you want to share, crop away what is not needed with Crop Image, then mark and save here. Cropping first means less to hide.

In the Parts I mark and Whole picture modes, your pictures are not uploaded. Reading the picture, applying the effect, saving the file and making the ZIP all happen in your browser, on your own device.

In Background (keep the person) mode, each picture is sent to our own background-removal service to find the person, and deleted there as soon as the outline is made. It is not shared with anyone else. If a picture must not leave your device, use Parts I mark and paint the background with the Brush instead.

Each picture is decoded by your browser into plain pixels at full size. Your marks are stored as positions relative to the picture, so they are drawn at the right place on the full-size file even though you marked them on a smaller preview.

The effect is applied to a copy of the picture, and the copy is laid over the original only where your marks are, with a soft or a sharp edge. The result is saved as JPG or PNG and offered for download.

Mark a little more than you need: the whole face with hair, the whole plate with its frame.

Use Solid colour for text, numbers and codes.

Look at the preview closely before saving; raise the strength if anything is still readable.

Use Oval for faces, Box for plates and screens, Brush for odd shapes.

Crop away what nobody needs to see before you blur.

Share the blurred copy and keep the original to yourself.
