How to convert Hindi PDF to Word

This Hindi PDF to Word converter turns a Hindi PDF into a Word document you can actually edit, with proper Hindi text instead of broken letters. It handles the three kinds of Hindi PDF people run into: modern Unicode PDFs, older PDFs typed in Kruti Dev or DevLys, and scanned pages or phone photos.

For documents that are entirely in English, the regular PDF to Word converter does the same job with the same quality.

  1. 1

    Add your PDF

Drop your Hindi PDF on the box, pick it from your files, or paste it with Ctrl+V. You can add several PDFs at once, up to 100 MB each.

  2. 2

Check the options (auto is fine)

The tool detects Unicode, Kruti Dev and DevLys text and scanned pages by itself. Open Options only if you want Kruti Dev output, a different Hindi font, .doc or .txt, or an OCR language such as Marathi.

  3. 3

    Convert

Press Convert to Word. A progress bar shows each page as it is read, including scanned pages read with OCR.

  4. 4

    Preview, fix and download

Download the Word file, or open Preview & edit to check the Hindi, correct any word, copy the text or save an edited copy.

Why Hindi PDFs break in normal converters

Most Hindi PDFs break in normal converters for one of two reasons, and knowing which applies is the first step to a clean Hindi PDF to Word conversion. It also explains everything that follows.

The first is legacy fonts. Before Unicode became standard, Hindi was typed in fonts such as Kruti Dev and DevLys. They draw Hindi letters over ordinary English keys: the file really stores the letters v, k, i, d, s, but the font paints them as आपके. As long as that exact font is present, the page looks right. The moment the text leaves that font, in a converter, a copy and paste or a search, the Hindi disappears and you see lines like vkids ;g tkudkjh.

The second is the order of the vowel signs. In Devanagari, the short i sign ि is written before the letter it belongs to but spoken after it, and the reph र् sits on top of the following letter. The legacy fonts store them in the order they are drawn, not the order they are read, so a converter that only swaps letters one by one still gets words like कार्यालय wrong.

A third, less obvious cause is a damaged text layer. Some PDFs made with modern Unicode fonts still store their conjuncts with a broken character map. The page looks perfect, but the text inside comes out as हȹदी instead of हिंदी. That is why copying Hindi from such a PDF gives strange symbols even though nothing looks wrong on screen.

This Hindi PDF to Word converter deals with all three. It recognises legacy fonts and converts them to real Unicode, puts the i sign and reph back in reading order, and when a page's text layer is damaged it reads that page with OCR instead of trusting the broken characters.

Kruti Dev and DevLys PDF to Word (Unicode)

The tool recognises Kruti Dev and DevLys text on its own, so a Kruti Dev PDF to Word or DevLys PDF to Word conversion needs no setting at all, and you get a Krutidev PDF to Unicode Word file in one step. It looks at the name of each font in the PDF, including Kruti Dev 010 and 011 and DevLys 010, and converts only the text written in those fonts.

Sometimes a PDF hides the real font name, for example after it has been edited or re-saved by another program. In that case the tool checks the text itself: lines full of the letter patterns the legacy font produces, with almost no real English words, are treated as legacy Hindi. English words on the same line are never touched, so a heading like आवेदन संख्या followed by Application No. 7016409496215 comes out with both parts correct.

The result is Hindi PDF to Word in Unicode, which is what every modern program expects. Unicode text can be edited in Word, Google Docs and phones, searched, copied into email or a website, and read by screen readers, without any special font installed. If the automatic check ever gets a document wrong, the Options panel lets you tell the tool directly which encoding the PDF uses.

Chanakya and Walkman-Chanakya use a different letter layout and are not converted yet; text in those fonts is left as it is rather than turned into wrong Hindi.

Need the Word file in Kruti Dev instead?

Some people need the opposite: a Word file in Kruti Dev rather than Unicode. Hindi typing tests, many older office templates and some court and district office formats still use it.

For that, choose Kruti Dev 010 under Hindi in the Word file. The tool converts the Hindi back into the legacy keystrokes and sets the font, putting the i sign and reph where that font expects them. In our tests, converting Hindi to Kruti Dev and back gave the original text every time.

The computer that opens the file needs that font installed, otherwise the text shows as English letters. Keep in mind that legacy-font text cannot be searched as Hindi, read aloud by screen readers or typed into online forms, so use it only where such a file is specifically required.

Unicode or Kruti Dev: which should you keep?

For almost everyone doing a Hindi PDF to Word conversion, keep the Word file in Unicode. It is the standard every current program, phone and website understands. Unicode Hindi can be searched, spell-checked, copied into email, pasted into online application forms and read aloud by screen readers, and it looks right on any computer without installing anything.

Choose Kruti Dev only when something specifically asks for it. The common cases are Hindi typing tests that still use it, older office templates built around it, and colleagues whose work is all in that font and who will be editing the file with that font. In those situations a Unicode file would force them to retype, so the Kruti Dev output saves real time.

If you are unsure, convert to Unicode first. You can always run the Unicode file through the tool again with Kruti Dev output later, but you cannot search or reuse legacy-font text easily once you have it.

Scanned Hindi PDF to Word with OCR

A scanned Hindi PDF is a photograph of paper, so there is no text in it to convert, and a Hindi OCR PDF to Word step is needed. This tool reads the page with OCR, recognising the Hindi letters in the image and writing them into Word as real, editable text. It does this automatically for any page that has no text layer.

Before reading a scan, the tool cleans the image where it needs it: it evens out uneven light from a phone photo, lifts faint text, removes speckle and straightens a page that was photographed at an angle. In our tests a dim phone photo tilted by three degrees came out at 97 percent character accuracy, almost the same as a clean 300 dpi scan.

Scans that contain a ruled table, such as a fee chart or a marks list, come out with a real Word table, each cell read separately, instead of a jumble of lines. OCR can also read Marathi, Sanskrit and Nepali, which use the same Devanagari script; pick the language under Options, or leave it on Auto for Hindi and English.

For the best result, photograph the page flat and in even light, fill the frame with the page, and scan at 300 dpi if you have a scanner. A sharp, straight, well-lit page reads far more accurately than a dark or crumpled one.

Check and correct before you download

You can check the Hindi before you save anything, which makes this a Hindi PDF to editable Word tool in the fullest sense. After converting, press Preview & edit to see the converted text on the page, with headings, lists and tables shown as they will appear.

Switch to Edit to correct a word the OCR misread or change a detail, then choose Download edited .docx. The tool builds a fresh Word file from your edited text and keeps headings, bullet points and tables. Copy all text puts the whole document on your clipboard, and Download .txt saves plain Unicode text that opens correctly in Notepad.

What is kept in the Word file

Headings

Titles and section headings become Word Heading styles, so the Navigation Pane and a table of contents work.

Lists

Bulleted and numbered points become real Word lists that continue when you add an item.

Tables

Tables come across as editable Word tables, including those in scanned pages with ruled lines.

Images

Photos, logos and stamps in a typed PDF are carried into the Word file.

Fonts and sizes

Bold, italic and sizes are kept, and Hindi text uses the font you choose.

Page layout

Each PDF page becomes its own page in Word, and repeated headers and page numbers go into Word's header and footer.

A heavily designed page, with text boxes laid over images or many columns, can shift a little in Word, because Word lays out text differently from a PDF. The text is always there and editable.

Hindi PDF to Word for government and office work

A large share of Hindi PDF to Word conversions are official or study documents, and they are exactly the files most converters struggle with.

Sarkari letters and notices

Government letters, circulars and notices are often in Kruti Dev or scanned from paper. Converting them gives you editable Unicode text you can quote, reply to or reuse without retyping.

Court and legal documents

Affidavits, agreements and orders frequently mix Hindi and English. Both stay correct in the same line, and figures such as amounts and dates are kept exactly.

Exam and admission forms

Application forms and certificates can be converted, corrected and filled in. If a portal then asks for a small file, the Compress PDF to 100 KB tool will shrink the final PDF.

Books and study notes

Notes, question banks and chapters in Hindi become editable Word files you can highlight, rearrange and print.

Convert Hindi PDF to Word on your phone

This Hindi PDF to Word converter works in any phone browser with nothing to install. On Android or iPhone, open this page, tap Select Hindi PDF files and choose the PDF from Files, Downloads, WhatsApp documents or Google Drive, then tap Convert to Word.

When it finishes, tap Download. The Word file opens in the Microsoft Word app or Google Docs, where the Hindi appears in a proper Devanagari font. Preview & edit also works on a phone, so you can fix a word before saving.

Typing and editing Hindi after conversion

Once your Hindi PDF is in Word as Unicode text, you can keep writing in Hindi directly, in the same font, without losing the original font style of the converted text. On Windows, add the Hindi keyboard in Settings under Time and language, then switch between English and Hindi with Windows key and Space. On a phone, add Hindi to Gboard or the iPhone keyboard.

If you type in Hindi by transliteration, typing hindi in English letters and letting the software turn it into हिंदी, Google Input Tools and the phone keyboards above both support it. The converted text and anything you add will use the same Unicode Hindi, so the document stays consistent.

After a Hindi PDF to Word conversion, to change the look of the whole document, select all the text and choose another Unicode Hindi font such as Mangal or Nirmala UI. Because the text is Unicode, changing the font never turns it back into English letters, which is exactly what used to happen with Kruti Dev files.

What the tool does with your PDF

  1. 1

    Each page is checked

The tool looks at every page to see whether it has usable text, whether that text is Unicode or a legacy font, and whether the text layer is damaged. A mixed document is handled page by page.

  2. 2

    Legacy Hindi is converted

Legacy Hindi text is translated into Unicode, and the ि sign and reph are moved into reading order. English text alongside it is left exactly as it was.

  3. 3

    Scans are cleaned and read

Scanned pages, phone photos and pages with a damaged text layer are cleaned, straightened and read with OCR in the language that fits, and ruled tables are read cell by cell.

  4. 4

    Word is rebuilt and tidied

The document is rebuilt with headings, lists, tables and images, repeated headers go into Word's header and footer, and all Hindi text is set in the font you chose.

  5. 5

    Your file is deleted

You download the result, and the copy on our server is removed straight away, or within 15 minutes if it is never collected.

Before you convert

  • Know what kind of PDF you have

If you can select and copy Hindi from it, it is typed; if you cannot, it is a scan and will be read with OCR.

  • Use the clearest copy

For scans, the sharpest and straightest copy gives the best Hindi. A new photo in good light often beats an old blurred scan.

  • Convert only what you need

For a long document, set a page range to convert just the pages you will edit. It is faster and gives a tidier file.

  • Decide on Unicode or Kruti Dev

Keep Unicode unless a typing test, template or colleague needs the legacy font.

Common problems and fixes

The text still looks like English letters

The PDF uses a legacy font the tool did not recognise. Open Options, set Hindi text in the PDF to Kruti Dev or DevLys, and convert again.

Matras are in the wrong place

This happens when a legacy-font file is treated as plain text. Choosing the right encoding under Options puts the ि sign and reph back in reading order.

A scanned page came out wrong

Rescan or rephotograph the page flat and in good light, at 300 dpi if possible. If the page is Marathi, Sanskrit or Nepali, choose that OCR language.

It asks for a password

Type the PDF's password in the box that appears, or remove it first with Unlock PDF.

The file is too large

Each PDF can be up to 100 MB. For a very long document, convert only the pages you need with the page range, or divide it with Split PDF.

It is processed as a short-lived job and deleted as soon as you download the result; anything not collected is deleted automatically within 15 minutes.

There is no account, no email and no watermark, and nothing is kept or shared. Edited downloads work the same way: your edited text is turned into a file, sent to you and discarded.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert a Hindi PDF to Word for free?

Add your Hindi PDF on this page and press Convert to Word, then download the .docx. It is free, with no sign-up, no email and no watermark, and the Hindi comes out as editable Unicode text.

Why does my Hindi text turn into English letters or boxes?

Can it convert Kruti Dev or DevLys PDF to Unicode Word?

Yes. Kruti Dev and DevLys text is detected automatically and converted to Unicode Hindi, with the ि sign and reph in the right place. English words on the same line are left unchanged.

Can I get the Word file in Kruti Dev font?

Yes. Under Options, choose Kruti Dev 010 for Hindi in the Word file. The computer that opens it needs the Kruti Dev 010 font installed.

Which Hindi font will the Word file use?

Nirmala UI by default. You can choose Mangal, Kokila, Noto Sans Devanagari or Arial Unicode MS instead under Options.

Can I convert a scanned Hindi PDF to Word?

Yes. Scanned pages and phone photos are read with OCR after the image is cleaned and straightened, and the Hindi comes out as editable text.

Yes. Choose Marathi, Sanskrit or Nepali as the OCR language under Options for scanned pages. Typed Unicode PDFs in these languages convert directly.

Will the matras and half letters come out correctly?
