Resize PDF

Drop one or more PDF files on the box above, choose a new page size and press the red button. Every page gets the size you picked, the content is scaled to sit neatly on it, and you download the new file a moment later. You can resize PDF pages to A4, Letter, Legal, 11 × 17, A3, A5, 4 × 6 inches, a size you type in yourself, or a percentage of the size they have now.

All of this happens in your own browser tab. The file is read on your device and the new PDF is written there too, so nothing is sent to our server and even a long report is finished quickly. The page itself is changed rather than turned into a picture, which means text stays sharp, searchable and selectable at any zoom.

To resize PDF page size the way you want, think about two things: the paper the file is meant for, and what should happen to the content on it. The first is the New page size card. The second is the Content card. Together they cover almost every job, from making a whole report match the office printer to turning a single page into a poster.

The current size of every file is shown in the list right under its name, for example Now: A4 or Now: 12× Letter, 2× Letter landscape. That tells you at a glance whether a document really needs changing and which pages are different from the rest. A mixed file comes out with all chosen pages in the same size, while Same as each page keeps landscape pages lying on their side.

A4 is 210 × 297 mm, or about 8.27 × 11.69 inches, and it is the standard paper in Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia and most of South America. Schools, universities, embassies and many online forms ask for A4, and an office printer outside North America almost always holds A4 paper.

To resize PDF to A4, press A4, keep Fit to page and Same as each page, and press the button. A Letter page is a little wider and shorter than A4, so it is scaled down by about 3% to fit the width, and a white band of roughly 6 mm appears at the top and the bottom. Choose Top under Position if you want all the extra space at the bottom instead, which looks natural for letters and forms.

If you would rather have no white band at all, Stretch fills the A4 page completely. The change in shape between Letter and A4 is small, so text looks only slightly taller, and many people never notice. Fill and crop also fills the page, but cuts a few millimetres from the sides, which can clip page numbers or a footer near the edge.

Letter is 8.5 × 11 inches (216 × 279 mm) and is the standard paper in the United States, Canada and Mexico. Files made in other countries usually arrive in A4, and printing them on Letter paper can cut off the bottom lines or make the printer ask for paper it does not have.

To resize PDF to letter size, press Letter and keep Fit to page. An A4 page is narrower and taller than Letter, so it is scaled down by about 6% to fit the height, leaving a strip of about 4.5 mm of white on the left and the right. Text stays perfectly readable, and nothing near the edges is lost.

Legal paper (8.5 × 14 inches) is the other common North American size. Going from Legal to Letter shrinks the page to about 79% of its size with Fit to page, because the height has to come down from 14 to 11 inches. For small print, check the preview, or use Some pages to change only the pages that are really needed.

Many forms, printing services and upload portals do not say Letter; they ask for 8.5 × 11. It is the same size. Press Letter, the button with 8.5 × 11 written next to it, and every page becomes exactly 8.5 by 11 inches.

To resize PDF to 8.5 x 11 from a phone scan, a photo turned into a PDF or a file with an odd page size, keep Fit to page and Same as each page. A scanned receipt that is long and narrow stays long and narrow on the page, centred, with white on both sides, instead of being pulled out of shape. If you add a margin of 0.25 in, nothing will sit right at the edge, which helps with printers that leave a border anyway.

In the US you may also see 8.5 × 14 (Legal), 7.25 × 10.5 (Executive, under More sizes) and 5.5 × 8.5 (half letter). Half letter is not in the list, but Custom takes it: type 5.5 and 8.5 and leave the unit at in.

Tabloid paper, also called ledger when it lies on its side, is 11 × 17 inches: exactly two Letter pages next to each other. It is used for architectural and technical drawings, large spreadsheets, restaurant menus, newsletters and small posters. Outside North America, A3 plays the same role and is only slightly smaller.

To resize PDF to 11x17, press 11 × 17 and keep Fit to page. A Letter page grows to about 129% of its size and fills the width, with some white space at the top and bottom. Drawn text and lines stay crisp when they grow, because they are stored as shapes, not as dots. A scanned page grows too, but it cannot gain detail it never had, so a sharp scan at 300 dpi works much better than a blurry one.

For a wide drawing or a spreadsheet, choose Landscape under Orientation so every page lies on its side, or keep Same as each page if the file already has landscape pages. When you print, choose 11 × 17 or Tabloid paper in the print dialog and Actual size, so the printer does not shrink it back to Letter.

Label printers for parcels usually take 4 × 6 inch labels, the size most shipping labels are made for. The trouble is that a label often arrives as a full Letter or A4 page with the label in one corner, or as a page of a size the printer does not expect, and it comes out tiny or cut off.

To resize PDF to 4x6, press 4 × 6 in and keep Fit to page. If the file already contains only the label, it now fills the 4 × 6 page and prints at full size on the label printer. If the label sits in one corner of a big sheet, first cut away the empty part of the sheet with Crop PDF, then resize the cropped file to 4 × 6; otherwise the whole sheet, white space included, is shrunk onto the small label and the barcode may become too small to scan.

Many labels are landscape, wider than tall. Same as each page turns such a label into a 6 × 4 page, which most label printers rotate on their own. If yours expects a tall label, pick Portrait. The same 4 × 6 size is the classic photo print, so you can also prepare a photo or a postcard design for a photo printer this way.

Many online tools change the page size by taking a picture of every page and placing that picture on a new sheet. The result looks fine at first, but the text is no longer text: you cannot search it, copy it or zoom in without blur. This tool works differently. It opens the page itself with pdf-lib, scales its content with an instruction stored in the PDF and sets the new page size, all without redrawing a single letter.

Because of that, you can resize PDF without losing quality in the way that matters. Text stays real text, fonts stay sharp at any zoom, and lines and drawings are still drawn as shapes. Links inside the page keep pointing to the right place, fillable form fields keep working and comments stay in place, because their positions are moved and scaled with the page. Bookmarks still lead to the right pages, since the pages themselves are not replaced.

Pictures and scanned pages keep every pixel they had. When a page is made smaller, they simply look finer; when a page is made bigger, they are spread over more paper, so a low-resolution scan can look softer on 11 × 17 than it did on Letter. That is a limit of the original scan, not of the resizing.

You can resize PDF online free here, with no account, no trial that runs out and no watermark on your pages. Add up to 20 files at once, each up to 200 MB, and do it again as often as you like. The only thing the new file contains is your own content on the new page size.

Free does not mean your files go somewhere else. The resizing is done by your browser on your device, so a contract, a medical letter or a bank statement never leaves your computer or phone. Once the page has loaded, you can even switch off Wi-Fi and keep working. The only exception is a password-protected PDF, which is explained below.

There is a way to change the paper size with the Preview app that comes with every Mac. Open the PDF, choose File, then Print, pick the new size under Paper Size, tick Scale to Fit, then open the PDF menu at the bottom left and choose Save as PDF. It works for a quick job, but the file is printed again: links, fillable fields and comments often do not survive, you cannot pick a different placement for each page, and you have to do one file at a time.

To resize PDF on Mac with this tool, open this page in Safari, Chrome or Firefox and drag one or more files from Finder onto the box. The pages themselves are changed, so links and form fields keep working, and you can do up to 20 files in one go with a single ZIP download. Cmd+Enter starts the job. The saved files land in your Downloads folder, and the originals stay as they were.

On Windows, open this page in Edge, Chrome or Firefox and drag the PDF from File Explorer onto the box. The new file goes to your Downloads folder. This is often quicker than printing to a PDF printer with a different paper size, and it keeps links and form fields that a print would lose.

On an iPhone or iPad, open the page in Safari, tap the box and choose Browse to pick a file from the Files app or iCloud Drive. After the job, tap Download PDF, and the file appears in Files under Downloads, ready to share, print or attach. On Android it works the same in Chrome or Samsung Internet. Phones have less memory than computers, so a very large scan may take a little longer.

Margins add white space on every side of the new page. Type a number and choose mm or in; 10 mm or 0.4 in is a comfortable margin for binding or hole punching, and 5 mm is enough for most printers that cannot print right to the edge. The content is scaled to fit inside the margin, and the preview shows the margin as a dashed blue frame.

Position matters when the new page is taller than the scaled content, for example when a wide page is placed on a tall sheet. Centre leaves the same space above and below, Top puts the content at the top with the space below it, and Bottom does the opposite. Left and right placement is always centred.

Orientation decides which way round the new size is used. Same as each page is the safe choice for mixed files: a landscape slide gets a landscape A4 page and a portrait letter gets a portrait one. Portrait or Landscape makes every page face the same way, which is useful when you want a whole set of slides printed upright, two per sheet, or a stack of wide tables all lying flat.

Sometimes only part of a document has the wrong size, such as a few scanned pages in the middle of a typed report, or one big drawing at the end. Open More options, choose Some pages and type the page numbers: 1-3, 7, 10-end. Only those pages get the new size; every other page stays exactly as it was.

This is also handy for a document that mixes Letter and A4 pages. The list under the file name shows how many pages have each size, so you can see which pages to change. If you only need to turn pages, not change their size, Rotate PDF is the simpler tool.

Add up to 20 PDFs and they all get the same settings in one run. Each file is listed with a small picture of page 1, its page count, its size in MB and its current page size. While the job runs, each line says Resizing… and then shows how many pages were changed and what size they are now.

When everything is ready, Download all (ZIP) saves the files together in one ZIP archive, and the small arrow next to each file saves just that one. If a file could not be changed, it shows a red note and the rest are still saved. Press More PDFs to start again with new files.

The new page size only helps if the printer uses it. In the print dialog, choose Actual size or 100%, not Fit or Shrink oversized pages, and pick paper that matches the new size. Otherwise the printer may scale the page again and undo the work.

For booklets, posters or labels printed by a shop, send them the resized file and tell them the size, for example A5 or 11 × 17. Since the pages carry the exact size, the print shop does not need to guess how to fit the content.

Changing the page size does not change the size of the file in MB. The content stays the same, only its scale and the paper size change, so a 5 MB PDF stays about 5 MB, whether its pages become A5 or A3. If a website says your file is too large, you need to compress it, not resize the pages.

For that, use Compress PDF, which makes pictures and scans lighter while the page size stays the same. You can use both tools in a row: first change the page size here, then compress the result. To change the pixel size of a photo instead of a PDF, Resize Image is the right tool.

If a PDF needs a password to open, the list shows Password needed and a small box for it. Type the password and press Unlock. The file and the password are sent to our server once so the encryption can be removed, the unlocked copy comes back to your browser and the server copy is deleted straight away. If the password is wrong, the tool says so and you can try again.

The resized file has no password. If it should be protected again, add a new password afterwards with Protect PDF. A PDF that opens without a password but blocks changes usually loads normally. Only change files you are allowed to edit.

Text does not reflow. The page is scaled as a whole, like a photocopier set to a different paper size, so making a page much smaller also makes the text smaller. A Letter page on A5 is about 69% of its old size; on a 4 × 6 label it is under half. Check the preview for small print.

With Fill and crop and with Keep size on a smaller page, the parts outside the new page are hidden, not deleted. They are still inside the file and could be found by someone who knows where to look, so do not use resizing to remove private details. To really remove page content, use a tool built for that purpose.

Each file can be up to 200 MB, and up to 20 files can be in the list at once. A damaged PDF that cannot be read is marked in the list and skipped. Bleed, trim and art boxes, which print shops use, are removed from changed pages, because they would no longer match the new size.

Once every page has the right size, you may want to finish the document. Merge PDF joins several resized files into one, Page Numbers adds numbers, Compress PDF makes the file small enough for e-mail and Flatten PDF fixes form fields in place so they print the same everywhere.

If you started with photos rather than a PDF, Image to PDF turns them into PDF pages first. To turn the resized pages into pictures, PDF to JPG saves each page as an image.
