How to Add Page Numbers to a PDF

Page numbers turn a stack of pages into a document. They let a reader cite a specific point, let a printer verify nothing is missing, and let a reviewer say "see page fourteen" instead of "somewhere in the middle". If your PDF was assembled from scans, merged from several files, or exported without numbering, adding them takes seconds — and this tool does it without uploading your document anywhere.

1

Choose your style

Pick one of six positions, a format like 1, Page 1, or 1 of 10, and set the size, color and starting number. The live preview updates instantly.

2

Upload your PDF

Drop the file. It is read locally in your browser and never uploaded to any server, so confidential documents stay private.

3

Download the result

Numbers are drawn onto every page and baked into the document permanently. Download and print or share.

Which Format and Position Should You Use?

FormatLooks LikeBest For
Plain1, 2, 3Books, reports, anything printed - clean and unobtrusive
Page NPage 1, Page 2Formal documents, legal filings, official submissions
N of Total1 of 10, 2 of 10Faxes, contracts, anything where a missing page must be obvious

For position, bottom-center is the safest default and what most printed documents use. Bottom-right suits documents that will be bound on the left. Top placements work when the bottom of your pages already contains footnotes or a footer.

Common Situations This Tool Solves

A merged document with no numbering

Combining several PDFs produces one file whose pages have no continuous numbering. Adding numbers afterwards makes the merged document read like a single coherent report.

Scanned documents that need referencing

Scans have no text layer and no numbers. Adding page numbers lets reviewers, lawyers and auditors cite specific pages without counting them by hand.

A report with a cover page

Cover pages should almost never carry a number. Tick Skip first page and numbering begins on page two, exactly as it does in professionally typeset documents.

Continuing numbering across volumes

If this file is part two of a longer document, set the starting number so numbering continues seamlessly from where the previous file ended.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I add page numbers to a PDF for free?

Choose a position and format, upload your PDF, and click Add Page Numbers. It is completely free with no page limits, no signup and no watermark added to your document.

Can I skip numbering the cover page?

Yes. Tick Skip first page and the cover stays clean while numbering begins on the second page - exactly as professionally typeset documents do it.

Can I start numbering from a number other than 1?

Yes. Set the Start at value to any number. This is useful when your file is a continuation of another document and numbering must carry on seamlessly.

What page number format should I choose?

Plain numbers suit books and reports, Page N suits formal and legal documents, and N of Total is best for contracts and faxes where a missing page must be immediately obvious.

Where should page numbers be positioned?

Bottom-center is the standard for printed documents. Bottom-right suits left-bound documents, and top placements work when your footer area is already occupied.

Is it safe to add page numbers to confidential PDFs?

Yes. Your PDF is processed entirely inside your browser using pdf-lib - never uploaded to any server, never stored, and never seen by anyone.

Does adding page numbers reduce quality or increase file size?

Your original content is completely untouched - nothing is re-rendered or re-compressed. The file grows only by a negligible amount for the added text.

Can I change the color and size of the numbers?

Yes. Use the color picker for any color, and the size slider for anything from 7 to 24 points. A muted grey at 10 or 11 points looks professional in most documents.

Can I add page numbers to a password-protected PDF?

Encrypted PDFs cannot be modified without their password. Remove the protection in your PDF reader first, then add numbers to the unlocked file here.

How do I add page numbers on iPhone or Android?

Open this page in Safari or Chrome, set your style, choose a PDF from your Files app, and download the numbered version straight to your phone.

Will the page numbers overlap my existing content?

Numbers are placed in the standard margin area, which is empty on most documents. If your pages have very tight margins, use a smaller font size or a different position.

Is this page numbering tool really free?

Completely free, with no page limits, no watermarks, no signup and no premium wall. Everything runs in your browser, so there are no server costs to pass on.
