Split PDF

To split PDF online, add your file to the box above, choose how to divide it and press the button. This PDF splitter runs entirely in your browser, so your document is not uploaded anywhere. The pages are copied exactly as they are, never redrawn or compressed, so text stays sharp and searchable, and bookmarks, links and form fields keep working inside each new file.

Long documents are hard to share and handle. A 200-page report is too large for many email systems, an upload portal may want just one certificate from a bundle, and a scanned stack of letters is easier to file when every letter is its own document.

Dividing a document also protects privacy: you send only the pages someone needs instead of the whole file. And smaller files open faster on phones, print only what is wanted, and are easier to find later because each one can have a clear name.

To split PDF by page range, choose By page range and type the ranges you want, separated by commas, such as 1-3, 4-8, 9-end. Each range becomes its own file, named after the pages it holds. Ranges may skip pages you do not need, repeat a cover page in several files, or even run backwards, like 10-1, to reverse the order.

If you prefer to see the pages, look at the thumbnails below the settings. Every page is coloured by the file it belongs to, and a pair of scissors sits between each two pages. Click the scissors to cut there, click again to join the pages back; the ranges box updates itself as you go. This visual way of cutting is the quickest for documents where you can see where each section begins.

To split PDF into multiple files of equal length, choose Every N pages and set the number. Every 1 page gives single pages, every 2 pages gives two-page files, which is handy for forms printed on both sides, and every 10 pages turns a long scan into manageable chunks. The last file simply holds whatever pages are left.

This is the fastest way to divide a document that is made of repeating parts of the same length, such as a stack of two-page invoices or a set of four-page tests scanned together.

To split PDF into single pages, choose Single pages. Every page becomes its own file, numbered with leading zeros, such as report-page-007.pdf, so the files stay in the right order in any folder. The results come together in one ZIP.

Single pages are useful for sharing one slide, sending one signed page back, or loading pages into a system that only accepts one page per upload. If you need images instead of PDFs, PDF to JPG turns pages into pictures.

Email providers usually refuse attachments over 20 or 25 MB, and many portals accept far less. To split PDF by size, choose By file size and pick a limit such as 10 MB or 25 MB, or type your own. The pages stay in order and are packed into as few parts as possible, each under the limit.

Behind the scenes the tool measures how many bytes each page needs, counting shared fonts and images only once per part, then checks every saved part and divides any part that is still over the limit. This is how you split large PDF files reliably: a 90 MB scan becomes, for example, four parts under 25 MB, with every page in its original quality.

If a single page is larger than the limit on its own, which happens with very high resolution scans, that page gets a part of its own and the tool tells you. Compress PDF can then make that part smaller.

Sometimes you do not want to divide a whole document, only to take a few pages out. To extract pages from PDF, choose Extract pages and tick the pages on the thumbnails, or type them, such as 2-5, 9. They are saved together as one new PDF, in the order you typed them, while the original stays untouched.

Tick Save each extracted page as a separate PDF to get one file per page instead. Extracting is ideal for pulling a single contract from a bundle, the one page a form asks for, or the chapters you want to read on your phone.

Two automatic modes separate PDF pages without counting them yourself. By bookmarks creates one file per chapter, using the document's own bookmarks, and names each file after its chapter; you can choose top-level chapters or deeper sections. Reports, manuals and e-books exported from Word usually have bookmarks.

At blank pages is made for scanning. When you scan a pile of documents with a blank sheet between each one, the tool finds the blank pages, uses them as dividers, and leaves them out of the results, so a single scan of twenty letters becomes twenty clean files. Odd & even, finally, puts the odd and even pages into two files, which helps with double-sided printing and scanning.

Big files are where most online tools struggle. Uploading a 300 MB PDF takes ages, and many services cap uploads at 50 or 100 MB. Because this tool works on your device, you can split large PDF files up to 500 MB without uploading a byte, and the splitting itself happens in a background process so the page stays responsive.

Only the pages you choose are copied into each part, never the whole document. A part made of five pages of a 1,000-page manual contains just those five pages and the fonts and images they use, which keeps the files small.

Scanned documents are pictures of pages, and they divide just as well as typed ones. Each page keeps its original scan resolution, because nothing is re-compressed, so small print and signatures stay readable in every new file. Scans are often large, which makes the By file size mode especially useful for them.

If you scan many documents in one go, put a blank sheet between them and use At blank pages afterwards. The tool looks at every page, ignores faint scanner shadows and punch holes near the edges, and treats a page as blank only when almost nothing is printed on it. Pages that carry a stamp, a page number or a few handwritten words are kept, and you can always add or remove a cut by hand.

To make the text in scanned files searchable or editable, run the parts through PDF to Word, which recognises the text with OCR.

Add several PDFs at once to bulk split them with the same rule: every 5 pages, single pages, under 10 MB, by bookmarks and so on. The ZIP then holds one folder per original file, so nothing gets mixed up. For a page range or extracted pages, the same ranges are applied to every file, which suits batches of forms that share one layout.

Pages are copied, not converted, so nothing about them changes: text stays selectable and searchable, images keep their original resolution, and the file size of each page stays the same. There is no watermark and no quality setting to worry about.

Bookmarks that point into a part are kept in that part, with their nesting. Links between pages keep working when both pages end up in the same file; links to pages that went into another file are removed rather than left broken. Fillable form fields stay fillable, with whatever was already typed in them.

Every new file gets a name you can understand later. Parts made from page ranges are named after the original file and their pages, such as handbook-pages-12-30.pdf. Single pages carry their page number with leading zeros, so they sort correctly in any folder, and parts made by size or every N pages are numbered part-1, part-2 and so on.

When you divide by bookmarks, each file is named after its chapter and numbered in reading order, such as 03-Results.pdf. With several documents at once, every original file gets its own folder inside the ZIP, so even a hundred new files stay organised.

Dividing, extracting and deleting pages are close cousins, and choosing the right one saves time. Dividing turns one document into several new files that together usually hold every page. Extracting makes one new file from just the pages you pick and leaves the rest alone. Deleting keeps one file but removes the pages you no longer want.

So when you want several files, divide; when you want one smaller file made of a few chosen pages, extract; and when you want the same file minus some pages, use Delete Pages. To reorder pages, rotate them or mix pages from several files, Organize PDF and Merge PDF are the better tools.

You can split PDF pages on an iPhone, an iPad or an Android phone in the browser, with no app to install. Open this page in Safari or Chrome, tap Select PDF file and pick the document from Files, Google Drive or your downloads, choose how to split it and tap the button. Download the files or share them to WhatsApp or email.

On Windows, Mac, Linux and Chromebook it works in Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari. There is no software to install and no account to create, so it is also a quick option on a work or school computer where you cannot install programs.

PDFs with an open password need it to be unlocked before their pages can be copied. Type the password on the file's card and press Unlock; that one file is sent to our server over an encrypted connection, unlocked, sent back and deleted straight away. The split itself then happens in your browser as usual. PDFs with only editing restrictions usually open without any password.

Your PDF is not uploaded. Reading the file, showing the pages, measuring sizes, finding blank pages and building every new PDF all happen in your browser, on your own device. That matters for contracts, medical records, bank statements and anything else you would rather keep to yourself.

The only exception is the optional unlock of a password-protected PDF described above, which is clearly labelled before it happens. Everything else stays on your computer or phone.

When you add a document, a small program running inside this page reads its structure: the list of pages, the bookmarks, and the fonts, images and drawings each page uses. When you press the button, it builds each new file by copying exactly the pages that belong to it, together with only the resources those pages need. Nothing is converted, so the pages are identical to the originals.

The work happens in a background thread, so the page stays responsive even with very large files, and the progress bar shows which part is being made. Page previews are drawn with the same open-source PDF engine the Firefox browser uses. All of this runs on your own device, which is why it is fast and private.

Everything on this page can be used with a keyboard. Press Tab to move between the buttons and settings, Space or Enter to choose, and Ctrl+Enter (Cmd+Enter on a Mac) to start as soon as the settings are right. You can also paste a PDF with Ctrl+V instead of choosing it.

Screen readers announce each page together with the file it will go into, the scissors buttons say which two pages they cut between, and progress and results are read out as they happen. The colours that mark the parts are always paired with part numbers, so the layout is clear without relying on colour alone.

Look at the page colours before splitting. They show exactly which pages go into which file, which catches a wrong range at a glance.

Give the new files clear names. Splitting by bookmarks names them after chapters automatically; for other modes, the names carry the page numbers.

Keep the original PDF. Splitting makes new files and never changes the one you added, so you can always split again differently.
