From damaged file to working copy in three steps
Add one damaged file or up to ten at once. Before anything is uploaded, your browser takes a quick look at each file and tells you whether it opens here and how many pages it has, or that it does not open at all. Then the files go to our server over an encrypted HTTPS connection, one after the other, where the repair runs.
Each file comes back as a new PDF with a report: how many pages were recovered, which method did the work, what problems were found and how the size changed. Your files are deleted from the server right after. The aim is simple: repair PDF documents that matter to you, honestly, and tell you plainly when there is nothing left to save.
- 1
Add the damaged files
Tap Select PDF files or drop them on the box. You can add up to 10 files of up to 200 MB each. A quick check shows whether each file opens in your browser.
- 2
Choose a repair method
Leave it on Automatic, which tries every method, or pick Quick fix, Deep repair or Rescue pages. Then press Repair PDF.
- 3
Download and read the report
Press Download PDF, or Download all (ZIP) for several files. The report shows the pages recovered, the problems found and the size before and after.
Shortcut: Ctrl+Enter, or Cmd+Enter on a Mac, starts the repair. You can also paste files from the clipboard. Your settings are remembered in this browser for the next visit.
Four repair methods, and how Automatic chooses
The four buttons under Repair method decide how hard the server works when you repair PDF files. Each uses a well-known open-source PDF engine, and each fixes a different kind of damage.
Automatic (tries every method)
Recommended. The structure is rebuilt first with MuPDF and with qpdf. If pages are still missing, the file is re-made from its content with Ghostscript and rescued page by page. The result that shows the most pages is kept.
Quick fix (keeps everything)
Rebuilds the cross-reference table and the object structure with MuPDF and qpdf. Text, links, bookmarks and form fields stay exactly as they were. Best when the file is only slightly broken.
Deep repair (re-makes the file)
Ghostscript draws every page again into a brand-new PDF. This fixes broken fonts and damaged content streams that a quick fix cannot reach. Form fields and some links are lost on the way.
Rescue pages (saves what can be shown)
Copies the pages one at a time and skips what is broken. A page whose content cannot be copied is saved as a sharp picture of what it shows, so you still get to read it.
How Automatic chooses: every finished version is opened and checked again, page by page, on the server. The version in which the most pages open and draw without an error wins. When two versions tie, the gentler method is preferred, so you keep text, links and form fields whenever that is possible.
A PDF repair tool online that shows its work
A lot of repair tools hand you a file and say nothing. This pdf repair tool online writes a report for every file, so you know what you got. The first line reads like this: 12 of 12 pages recovered, Structure rebuilt (MuPDF), 2.4 MB to 2.1 MB.
Under it is the list of problems that were found. The common ones are: no PDF header, end of file missing (the file looks cut off), cross-reference table missing, broken cross-reference table, and a number of pages that could not be drawn. If the file turned out to be fine, the report says no damage found; the file was cleaned and rebuilt.
The method line uses four plain names: Structure rebuilt (MuPDF), Structure rebuilt (qpdf), Re-made from the page content (Ghostscript) and Pages rescued one by one. That tells you at a glance whether your links and form fields are likely to have survived.
Repair corrupted PDF files: what goes wrong inside
A PDF is not one block of data. It is a set of numbered objects, such as pages, fonts, pictures and text streams, plus a table at the end of the file called the cross-reference table. That table lists where each object starts. A PDF reader jumps to the end of the file first, reads the table and then fetches the pages.
Most corruption hits exactly that weak point. When the end of the file is cut off, or the byte positions in the table no longer match, a strict reader gives up straight away, even though every page may still be in the file. To repair corrupted pdf files of this kind, the tool scans the whole file for objects, writes a fresh table and saves a clean copy. This is what Quick fix does, and it is the first step of Automatic.
Other damage sits inside the objects themselves: a compressed text stream with a few wrong bytes, a font that is half missing, a picture that ends early. A new table does not help there. Deep repair and Rescue pages are made for those cases.
Repair damaged PDF pages that will not draw
Sometimes a file opens, but some pages are blank, show an error, or stop the reader when you scroll to them. The page objects are there, but their content cannot be drawn. The browser check and the server health check both count how many pages draw without an error, and the report lists how many could not be drawn before the repair.
To repair damaged pdf pages, Automatic first tries the structure rebuild. If some pages still fail, Ghostscript re-makes the file from what it can read, and Rescue pages copies every page that can be copied one at a time. A page whose content is broken beyond copying is saved as a picture of what it shows, so at least you can read it again.
If you already know which kind of damage you have, pick the method yourself. Deep repair suits files with font errors and garbled text; Rescue pages suits files where a few pages are lost and you simply want everything else back.
Repair PDF that won't open in any reader
Some files do not open at all. Your reader shows an error, a blank window or nothing, and the file looks useless. The browser check on this page tells you the same thing honestly: Does not open, often with a hint such as no PDF header or end of file missing.
A file that does not open in a reader is very often still repairable, because readers are strict and repair engines are patient. MuPDF and qpdf read the file from the start, find the objects that are still intact and build a working file around them. So the first step to repair pdf that won't open is simply to add it here and leave the method on Automatic.
When the server cannot get a single page out of the file, you will see Not repaired with the message This PDF could not be repaired. That means the data needed for the pages is not in the file. The section below explains why that happens.
Why PDFs break: the common causes
Most damaged PDFs were fine when they were made. They break on the way to you, or while they are being saved. These are the usual reasons.
Incomplete download
The connection dropped or the browser stopped before the end. The file has a normal name and a size, but its end, including the cross-reference table, is missing.
Email attachment damage
Some mail systems and older programs encode attachments badly, or cut them at a size limit. The file arrives with the right name and the wrong bytes.
USB stick or card removed too early
Pulling out a stick or memory card while a copy is still being written leaves a file that is partly written, or partly filled with zeros.
Crashed or interrupted save
If a program, the computer or the battery dies while a PDF is being saved, the file may have new parts and old parts that no longer fit together.
Faulty disk or sync
A failing hard disk, or a cloud sync that was interrupted, can change bytes in the middle of a file or leave an older half of it.
Buggy PDF software
Some programs write PDFs with small errors in the structure. Lenient readers open them, strict ones refuse, and printers may give up halfway.
Repair PDF for printing when pages fail at the printer
A PDF can look fine on screen and still fail at the printer. The print job stops on one page, pages come out blank, fonts turn into boxes, or the printer reports an error and prints nothing. Printers and print shops often use stricter software than your screen reader, so small structural errors show up there first.
To repair pdf for printing, try Deep repair. Ghostscript draws every page again into a brand-new PDF, with the fonts and pictures written out cleanly, which is very close to what a print workflow wants. Check the result on screen, then print. If you only need to send the file to a printer, losing form fields usually does not matter.
If the problem is only one bad page, Automatic or Rescue pages may give you a cleaner result. Delete Pages can then remove a page you do not need, and Compress PDF can make a very large print file easier to send.
What a repair cannot bring back
Repair can rebuild structure, but it cannot invent data. If a download stopped at 40 percent, the last 60 percent of the file never reached your device. The pages stored in that part are gone, and no tool can bring them back, because the information is not in the file anymore. The repaired copy will contain the pages that were in the part that arrived.
The same is true for files that are mostly zeros, which is what you often get after a failed copy to a USB stick or a damaged disk. A file can have the right size and name and still hold nothing but empty bytes. The result box then says These files could not be repaired, and the best fix is to get a fresh copy from the sender, the original website or a backup.
Deep repair also has a price: it re-makes the file from its page content, so form fields and some links are lost. Bookmarks may not survive either. If those matter, try Quick fix first and compare.
Rescued pages saved as pictures, and OCR
When Rescue pages, or Automatic, finds a page whose content cannot be copied into the new file, it does not just drop the page. If the page can still be drawn, it is saved as a sharp picture of what it shows. You can read it, print it and send it, but you cannot select or search the text on that page.
The report tells you when this has happened. To make those pages searchable again, run them through PDF to Text, which reads the words from the page with OCR. OCR is good but not perfect, so check names, numbers and amounts against the picture.
Password-protected PDFs
A PDF with a password to open it cannot be repaired until it is unlocked, because the content is encrypted and the repair engines cannot read it. The browser check shows Password-protected for such files, and the server answers with: This PDF has a password. Unlock it first with Unlock PDF, then repair it.
So use Unlock PDF with the password you know, download the unlocked copy, and add that copy here. When the repaired file is ready, Protect PDF puts a password back on it if you need one.
Document details, file names and batches
Two small settings sit under More options. The defaults suit almost everyone, and Reset these options brings them back.
Keep title, author and subject
On by default. The document details from the damaged file, such as its title, author and subject, are copied into the repaired copy when the rebuild lost them.
Add -repaired to the name
On by default. A file called report.pdf comes back as report-repaired.pdf, so you never mix it up with the broken original.
Up to 10 files at once
Add several files and press the button once. They are repaired one after another, each with its own report and its own download button.
Download all (ZIP)
With more than one repaired file, one button saves them all in a ZIP file called repaired-pdfs.zip. With one file, you get the PDF itself.
Repair PDF online free, with every method included
Every method on this page is free: Automatic, Quick fix, Deep repair and Rescue pages, with the full report. There is no paid plan that unlocks better repairs and no watermark on the result. You can repair pdf online free as often as you need, up to 10 files of up to 200 MB each per batch.
The heavy work runs on our server, not on your device, so you can repair PDF files of any size even from an older phone. You only wait for the upload, the repair and the download.
Repair PDF free no sign up, files deleted right after
There is no account, no e-mail address and no trial period. Open the page, add the files, press the button and download. That is how a repair pdf free no sign up service should work: you came to fix a file, not to fill in a form.
Your files travel to our server over an encrypted HTTPS connection. They are repaired there and deleted right after, together with every working copy the server made. We do not keep them, read them or use them for anything else, and the repaired PDF goes straight back to your browser.
Repair PDF file online on a computer, phone or tablet
On Windows, Mac, Linux or a Chromebook, open the page in any up-to-date browser and drag files from File Explorer or Finder onto the box. The repaired copies land in your Downloads folder. Because the server does the work, it is just as quick to repair pdf file online on an old laptop as on a new one.
On an iPhone or iPad, tap Select PDF files and choose the file from Files, iCloud Drive or a mail attachment you saved there. On Android, the picker shows Downloads, Drive and other apps. The repaired PDF is saved to Downloads, where you can open it or share it.
Files without a .pdf ending can be added too. A damaged attachment sometimes arrives with a strange name or type, and the picker accepts it so the server can take a look.
Fix PDF online free: when another tool fits better
Not every PDF problem is damage. If the file opens fine but is too large, locked or in the wrong order, another tool is the better fix.
| Tool | What it does | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
| This tool | Rebuilds broken files and rescues pages | The file will not open, shows errors or fails to print |
| Unlock PDF | Removes a password you know | The file is password-protected, before a repair |
| Compress PDF | Makes the file smaller | The file opens but is too large to send |
| PDF to Text | Reads the words with OCR | Rescued pages are pictures and you need the text |
| Delete Pages | Removes pages you do not need | One page is beyond repair and should go |
| Flatten PDF | Turns form fields and notes into page content | A form looks different in each reader |
So if you want to fix pdf online free, start with the question: is the file broken, or is it just too big, locked or messy? For a file that opens but has pages in the wrong order, Organize PDF is the right place, and Merge PDF joins repaired parts back into one file.
Repair PDF tool free: tips for the best result
Start with Automatic
It tries the gentle methods first and only re-makes the file when pages are still missing. You rarely gain anything by guessing.
Keep the original
Do not delete the damaged file until you have checked the repaired copy. You may want to try another method later.
Try Quick fix for forms
If the file is a form, Quick fix keeps the form fields. Use Deep repair only when Quick fix does not show all pages.
Compare the page count
The report shows how many pages were recovered. If the number is lower than you expected, ask the sender for a fresh copy.
Use a free tool before you pay
A repair pdf tool free of charge is worth trying first. Many files only have a broken table, which is quick to fix.
Check the file in two readers
Open the result in your browser and in another PDF reader. A file that opens in both is very likely sound.
How to stop PDFs from breaking again
Wait until a download has finished before you open or move the file, and compare its size with the size on the website if one is shown. In a browser, a file still marked as downloading is not complete.
Use Eject or Safely remove before you pull out a USB stick or memory card. Save to a local folder first and copy to the stick afterwards, rather than saving straight onto it.
Send large PDFs as a link from a cloud drive instead of an email attachment, or make them smaller with Compress PDF first. Keep a backup of important documents in a second place, so a broken copy is never your only copy.
Troubleshooting: error messages and what they mean
These are messages people see in PDF readers, and the messages this page shows. Each one hints at what went wrong.
Failed to load PDF document
Common in browsers. The structure is broken or the file is cut off. Add it here on Automatic; a rebuild of the table often fixes it.
The file is damaged and could not be repaired
The reader's own repair gave up. Our methods work differently, so try Automatic, then Deep repair if pages are still missing.
There was an error opening this document
Often a damaged attachment, a file that is not really a PDF, or a password. Check the browser note: Does not open or Password-protected.
Does not open, no PDF header
The start of the file is not a PDF. It may be another file type with a .pdf name, or the start was overwritten.
This PDF could not be repaired
No page could be saved. The file may be mostly zeros or cut off very early; get a fresh copy from the sender.
You can add up to 10 files at a time
Repair the first ten, press New files, then add the rest. Files larger than 200 MB cannot be added.
What to do with the repaired file
With a working file again, Compress PDF makes it small enough to e-mail, and Protect PDF adds a password. Merge PDF joins it with other documents, and Split PDF takes out the pages you want to send on their own.
If you want to check that nothing changed in the text, Compare PDF shows two versions side by side with the differences marked.
Frequently asked questions
How do I fix a PDF that is damaged?
Add the file, leave the method on Automatic and press the repair button. The server rebuilds the file in up to four ways and keeps the version that shows the most pages. Download it and read the short report to see what was fixed.
Can I repair pdf online free?
Yes. All four methods and the report are free, with no paid plan and no watermark. You can repair up to 10 files of up to 200 MB each in one go, as often as you like.
Is there a way to repair pdf free no sign up needed?
Yes, this page. There is no account, no e-mail and no trial. Add your files, press the button and download the repaired copies.
How do I repair corrupted pdf files?
Most corrupted files have a broken or missing cross-reference table, the index at the end of the file. Automatic rebuilds that table first with MuPDF and qpdf. If pages are still missing, it re-makes the file with Ghostscript and rescues pages one by one.
Can you repair damaged pdf pages that show blank or an error?
Often, yes. Deep repair re-draws every page into a new file, which fixes many broken fonts and streams. Rescue pages copies every page it can and saves a page that cannot be copied as a picture of what it shows.
How do I repair pdf that won't open at all?
Add it here even if no reader opens it. Repair engines read the file from the start and pick up the objects that are still intact, so many files that will not open can be rebuilt. If nothing can be saved, the page tells you so.
Which repair method should I choose?
Automatic is the right choice for almost every file. Pick Quick fix if you must keep form fields and links, Deep repair for font and print problems, and Rescue pages when you only want the pages that still work.
What does the repair report show?
It shows how many pages were recovered, which method was used, the size before and after, and the problems found, such as a missing end of file or a broken cross-reference table.
Can I repair pdf file online on my phone?
Yes. Open the page in Safari, Chrome or another browser, tap Select PDF files and choose the file. The work runs on our server, and the repaired copy is saved to your Downloads.
Can I repair pdf for printing when the printer stops?
Yes. Deep repair draws every page again into a clean new PDF, which printers handle far better. Check the result on screen, then print it again.
Is this repair pdf tool free for several files at once?
Yes. Add up to 10 files, press the button once, and each file gets its own result and report. With more than one file, Download all (ZIP) saves them together.
Is a pdf repair tool online safe for private documents?
Here, files travel to our server over an encrypted HTTPS connection, are repaired and are deleted right after, together with every working copy. We do not keep them or use them for anything else.
What other ways are there to fix pdf online free?
If the file is not damaged but too large, locked or in the wrong order, use a tool made for that job, such as one that compresses, unlocks or reorders pages. A repair only helps with broken files.
Can a cut-off download be repaired?
Partly. The pages in the part that arrived can usually be rebuilt, but the missing end of the file is gone and no tool can bring it back. Download the file again to get all pages.
Why were some pages saved as pictures?
Their content could not be copied into the new file, but the page could still be drawn. A picture lets you read and print it. To make the text searchable, run those pages through an OCR tool.
Will form fields, links and bookmarks survive?
With Quick fix, yes, they stay as they were. Deep repair re-makes the file from the page content, so form fields and some links are lost. Automatic prefers the gentle methods when they show all pages.
Can I repair a password-protected PDF?
Not directly, because the content is encrypted. Unlock the file first with the password you know, then add the unlocked copy here.
How many files can I add, and how large?
Up to 10 files at a time, each up to 200 MB. To repair more, finish the first batch, press New files and add the next ones.
Are my files stored anywhere?
No. They are deleted from the server right after the repair. The repaired copy is sent straight back to your browser and saved only on your device.
Why is the repaired file a different size?
The rebuild removes unused objects and compresses the file again, which often makes it smaller. Deep repair writes fonts and pictures out again, which can make it larger. The report shows both sizes.
What does no damage found mean?
The file had no errors that the checks could see, so it was cleaned and rebuilt anyway. If it still fails somewhere, try Deep repair, or open it in another reader to rule out a reader problem.
