Edit PDF

Open a PDF and every page appears below a toolbar. Pick a tool, click or drag on the page, and your change shows up at once. When you are done, press Download PDF and you get a copy of the file with your edits written into it. The original on your device is not changed.

It is made for the everyday fixes that do not justify a desktop program: a wrong date in a letter, a typo in a price list, a missing name on a form, a note for a colleague, a signature on the last page. This free edit pdf tool covers those jobs in a few clicks, on a computer or a phone.

Choose Add text, click where the words should start and type. Press Enter for a new line. The box grows as you type, and you can drag it to a better spot at any time, even while another tool is active. Drag the corner square to make the box wider, which matters when you set the text to centre or right alignment.

Before you click, set the font, size and colour in the bar under the toolbar, and every new box uses those settings. After you click, the same bar changes the box that is selected. That way you can edit pdf to add text in the same size as the printed words around it, for example to fill a blank line in a contract or to add a reference number to an invoice.

There is no limit on how many boxes you add. Each one is saved as real text in the PDF, so in most cases it can be selected, copied and searched in any PDF reader after you download the file. Text in other alphabets is the exception, as explained further down.

Choose Edit existing text and wait a moment while the page is read. Each line of text then gets a light blue outline. Click the line you want to change and a text box opens on top of it with the old words already typed in. Change what you need and click somewhere else when you are done.

Behind the scenes, three things happen. First, the old line is covered with a box in the colour of the page around it, which the tool picks up from the pixels at the edge of the line, so a cream or grey background gets a cream or grey cover, not a white patch. Second, the darkest colour inside the line is used for the new text, so black stays black and dark blue stays dark blue. Third, the size is read from the PDF itself, and the font style is matched: Sans, Serif or Mono, plus bold and italic when the original font is bold or italic.

This is the quickest way to edit pdf text such as a name, a date, an amount or a wrong word. The result looks right in most documents. Because the new words are set in a standard font, a sharp eye may see that a line was changed when the original used a special typeface, and long lines may come out slightly longer or shorter than before.

A PDF does not store paragraphs the way a Word file does. It stores a list of small pieces of text, each placed at a fixed point on the page, much like letters glued onto paper. There is no hidden rule that says this word follows that word and should move to the next line when the line gets full.

That is why the text never re-flows. If your new wording is longer than the old line, it runs further to the right instead of pushing the rest of the paragraph down. Keep edits close to the length of the original, or put a line break in yourself and use Edit existing text on the next line too. For a short paragraph you can also white out the whole block and type it again with Add text.

The original font usually cannot be reused either. Most PDFs carry only the letters that were used in the document, a trick that keeps files small. If the word you type needs a letter that was never in the file, the old font simply does not have it. So edited lines are written in one of the three standard PDF fonts: Helvetica for Sans, Times for Serif and Courier for Mono.

When a document needs more than a few line changes, a different route works better: turn it into an editable document with PDF to Word, make the changes there, where text does re-flow, and save it back as a PDF with Word to PDF.

Everything you add is drawn on top of the existing pages. The tool does not rebuild the document from scratch, so the pages, fonts, pictures, links, bookmarks and layout you did not touch stay as they were. Page size and orientation do not change, and the number of pages stays the same.

That is the honest way to edit pdf without changing format: the parts you edit look new, and the rest is left byte for byte. The file is saved with pdf-lib, a library that adds the new items to the page and writes the document out again. Form fields keep working unless you choose to flatten them.

If the layout itself should change, use a tool made for it. Organize PDF moves pages into a new order, Rotate PDF turns pages, Delete Pages removes the ones you do not need and Merge PDF joins several files into one.

Whiteout covers part of a page with a solid box. It is white at first, which suits most documents; select the box and use Cover colour to match a coloured page. Draw the box, then add new text on top with Add text if you want to replace what was there. Whiteout is also the simple fix for a stray mark, an old logo or a phone number that should not be printed.

Keep one thing in mind: whiteout hides, it does not delete. The text under the box is still in the file, and someone with the right software can lift the box or copy the hidden words. For anything confidential, such as an account number or a medical detail, do not rely on a cover alone; make a new PDF from the source document without that information.

Highlight works like a marker pen. Drag over a word, a line or a whole paragraph, and a see-through stripe in yellow, green, blue or pink is drawn there. Because the colour is see-through, the words underneath stay readable, both on screen and when printed.

Rectangle and Ellipse draw boxes and ovals as you drag. They start with no fill, so the page shows through; choose a fill colour if you want a solid shape, or press no fill to make it see-through again. The line colour and the width slider set the border.

Line and Arrow draw straight lines from where you press to where you let go. Arrows are handy for review notes: point at a figure, a total or a clause and add a short comment next to it with Add text. Draw is the freehand pen, saved as a smooth line in the colour and width you chose.

A click without dragging adds nothing, so a missed click does not leave tiny dots on the page. To move a line, an arrow or a drawing, switch to Select / move and drag the line itself. Boxes, ovals, whiteout and highlights also have the corner square for resizing.

Choose Image, pick a picture, and the editor asks you to click where it should go. The picture appears centred on that spot and the tool switches to Select / move, so you can drag it into place and resize it from the corner straight away. The corner changes width and height freely, so keep the proportions by eye.

PNG and JPG pictures are embedded as they are. Other formats your browser can open, such as WebP or GIF, are turned into a PNG first, because those are the two picture types a PDF can hold directly. A PNG with a see-through background is best for logos and stamps, because the page shows around the shape.

Choose Signature and a small panel opens with three tabs. Draw lets you sign with a mouse, a trackpad, a finger or a pen in a white box; Clear starts again. Type turns your name into a signature in a handwriting-style script font. Upload takes a picture of your signature, ideally a PNG with a see-through background.

Press Use signature, then click on the page where it belongs. It is placed in dark blue ink and can be moved and resized like a picture. For a whole signing flow with a saved signature and date, Sign PDF is made for that job.

A signature added this way is a picture on the page. It is fine for most everyday forms and letters, but it is not a certified digital signature with a certificate, which some legal and banking documents ask for.

Many PDFs have form fields built in: boxes you can type into, checkboxes, dropdown lists and groups of round buttons where you choose one option. When a file has them, a Form fields panel appears next to the pages with every field listed by its name, up to 300 fields.

Type into the text fields, tick the checkboxes and pick the options from the lists, then press Download PDF. The values are written into the real fields, so the form still works in other PDF readers. That makes it easy to edit pdf form online free, whether it is a job application, a school form or a tax sheet.

Tick Flatten if the form should be final. The answers are then printed onto the page and the fields are removed, so nobody can change them later. Leave it off if someone else still has to fill in their part. The standard PDF fonts only know Western European letters. Text in Greek, Cyrillic, Arabic, Hebrew, Hindi, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Thai and many other scripts, and emoji, cannot be written with them. When a text box contains such characters, the tool draws that box as a sharp, high-resolution picture of the text instead, so every language works and looks right.

The only difference you may notice is that text saved as a picture cannot be selected or searched in the downloaded PDF. Latin text in the same file is still saved as real text. If searchable text in another script matters, write it in a document program and use Word to PDF.

A scanned page is a photo of paper. It has no text inside, so Edit existing text finds no lines to click on. You can still edit it: cover the part you want to change with Whiteout, set the cover colour to match the paper, and type the new words on top with Add text.

If you need the words of a scan as text, run OCR first. Image to Text reads the words from a picture, and PDF to Text gets the text out of PDF pages. OCR is not perfect, so check names and numbers before you copy them anywhere.

The editor runs in your browser tab, on your own device. There is no server doing the work, so there is no queue, no daily limit on files and no paid plan for more pages. Files up to 100 MB can be opened.

Your PDF is opened and edited inside your browser tab. The pages, your edits and the saved copy are made on your device and are not uploaded or stored by us. Closing the tab clears the file from memory.

There is one exception. When a PDF has a password, it has to be unlocked before it can be edited. For that step, the file and the password are sent once over an encrypted connection to our server, and the unlocked copy comes straight back to your browser. Editing and saving then happen on your device, as with any other file. The downloaded copy has no password; Protect PDF adds one again, and Unlock PDF makes a copy without a password if that is all you need.

You do not need any desktop PDF program, any plug-in or any app for this. A modern browser such as Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari or Samsung Internet is enough. That is useful on a work computer where you cannot install software, on a borrowed laptop, or when you just need one quick fix.

If the question is how to edit pdf without adobe software or another paid editor, this page is one answer. It does not do everything a full desktop editor does, as the limits below explain, but for text fixes, markup, signatures and forms it is usually all you need.

On a Mac, open the page in Safari, Chrome or Firefox, drag the PDF from Finder onto the box, and use the trackpad to click and drag on the pages. Cmd+Z and Cmd+Y undo and redo, and the Delete key removes the selected item. The edited copy lands in your Downloads folder. That covers the usual reasons to edit pdf on mac without extra software.

On Windows, drag the file from File Explorer or click Select PDF file. Ctrl+Z, Ctrl+Y and Delete work the same way. Linux and Chromebooks work too, in any up-to-date browser. A large screen with zoom at 125% or 150% is the most comfortable for exact work.

On an iPhone or iPad, open the page in Safari or Chrome, tap Select PDF file and choose the document from Files, iCloud Drive or another storage app. Tap a tool, then tap or drag on the page with your finger. The toolbar shows icons only on a narrow screen, so look for the T for Add text and the pen for Signature.

Drawing tools stop the page from scrolling while you draw, so a finger signature does not slide away. To scroll through the pages, switch to Select / move. Keyboard shortcuts are not needed: use the Undo and Redo buttons and the Delete button in the settings bar. On Android the steps are the same: the file picker shows Downloads, Drive and other apps, and the edited copy is saved to Downloads. Turn the phone sideways for a wider page, or pick a higher zoom to place text exactly.

Text does not re-flow, and edited lines use Helvetica, Times or Courier rather than the original typeface. Very short lines and big headings may show the switch in font most clearly.

Edit existing text needs a real text layer. Scans and text that is part of a picture cannot be clicked; use Whiteout and Add text on those pages. Text that is stored in an unusual order, such as in some tables, may be split into several short lines.

Whiteout and the cover under edited lines hide the old content but do not remove it from the file. The tool does not delete, reorder or rotate pages, and it does not edit pictures that are already inside the PDF.

Text in other scripts and emoji is saved as a picture, which looks right but cannot be searched. Very large files with hundreds of pages work, but take longer to open and use more memory, especially on older phones.

With your edits saved, Compress PDF makes the file small enough to e-mail and Protect PDF adds a password. Merge PDF joins it with other documents, and Split PDF takes out the pages you want to send on their own.
