How to change DPI of image to 300 in three steps

Add your pictures to the box above and you will see the DPI stored in each one right away, next to its size in pixels and the size it would print at. Pick a new DPI, choose what should change, and press the red button.

Most people want to change DPI of image files for one reason: a print shop, a self-publishing site or a design program asked for a number like 300. This page sets that number, shows you what it means for the printed size, and tells you honestly when a picture has too few pixels for the job.

  1. 1

    Add your pictures

Click Select images, drop files on the box or paste with Ctrl+V. JPG, PNG, WebP, HEIC, GIF, BMP and TIFF all work.

  2. 2

    Pick the new DPI

Choose 72, 96, 150, 200, 300, 600 or type your own. Then choose Only the DPI, Keep the print size or Set a print size.

  3. 3

    Change and download

Press the button, check the new pixels and print size, then save each picture or download them all as a ZIP.

Your settings are remembered on this device, so the next batch uses the same DPI and mode. Ctrl+Enter starts the change from the keyboard.

Check image DPI online before you change anything

Before you change a thing, it helps to know where you stand. This is a simple way to check image DPI online: drop a picture on the box and the Now column shows the DPI saved inside the file, or Not set if the file has none. Nothing is changed until you press the button.

For JPG files the tool reads all three places a DPI can live: the JFIF header, the EXIF data written by cameras and phones, and the resolution block that Photoshop adds. For PNG files it reads the pHYs chunk. When these disagree, it shows the one that Photoshop and most other apps trust first.

Check image DPI and size in one list

DPI on its own tells you very little. What matters for printing is the DPI together with the pixels. So the list lets you check image DPI and size side by side: the stored DPI, the width and height in pixels, and the print size at the DPI you have picked, in cm, inches or mm.

Change the DPI in the settings and the print size column updates at once. That makes it easy to try 150, 300 and 600 and see which one gives you the printed size you need, before you save anything.

What DPI really means

DPI stands for dots per inch. In a digital picture it is really a note saved in the file that says how many pixels should fit into one inch of paper. A picture 3000 pixels wide at 300 DPI prints 10 inches wide. The same picture at 150 DPI prints 20 inches wide.

The pixels are the real picture. The DPI only decides how big those pixels are spread when printed. Screens ignore it completely, which is why a picture looks the same on your phone whether it says 72 or 300 DPI.

Set 300 DPI for print in one click

To change DPI of image to 300, add the picture, leave 300 selected and keep the mode on Only the DPI. Press the button and the file now says 300 DPI. The pixels are not touched, so the picture looks exactly the same; only the print size gets smaller.

For example, a 2400 × 3000 pixel photo saved at 72 DPI would print at about 33 × 42 inches. After the change it prints at 8 × 10 inches, and every inch has 300 pixels. That is what most printers and publishers mean when they ask for 300 DPI.

Change DPI of image without changing size

Only the DPI is the mode to change DPI of image without changing size in pixels. The width, the height and every pixel stay the same. For JPG and PNG the file is not even re-saved: the tool copies the bytes and rewrites only the small DPI notes, so there is no quality loss at all.

If by size you mean the printed size, choose Keep the print size instead. Then the picture keeps its inches or centimetres on paper, and the tool adds or removes pixels to match the new DPI. The size column in the list always shows which of the two is changing.

Three ways to change the DPI

Only the DPI

The pixels stay exactly the same. Only the DPI note changes, so the print size gets smaller or bigger. JPG and PNG are changed without re-saving.

Keep the print size

The picture prints at the same size as before. Pixels are added or removed to fit the new DPI. Adding pixels makes the file bigger, not sharper.

Set a print size

Type a width and height in cm, inches or mm. Pixels are set so the picture prints at exactly that size at the new DPI.

Keep proportions

With Set a print size, tick Keep proportions and type only the width. The height follows the shape of each picture, so nothing is squashed.

Change DPI of image online free, right in your browser

You can change DPI of image online free here, with no sign-up, no watermark and no daily limit. The work is done by your own browser on your own device, so it is quick and private, and it works the same on Windows, Mac, Linux, Chromebook, iPhone and Android.

Only TIFF pictures need our server, because browsers cannot open them. They are converted and deleted straight away. Everything else, including the DPI reading, stays on your device.

Increase DPI of image to 300 for printing

To increase DPI of image to 300 for printing, first look at the pixels. If the print size column shows the size you need at 300 DPI, choose Only the DPI and you are done: the picture is ready and nothing was lost.

If the print size comes out too small, the picture simply has too few pixels for that size at 300 DPI. You can choose Set a print size, and the tool will add pixels so the numbers match. The file will pass a 300 DPI check, but it will not gain real detail. A larger original is always the better answer.

Increase DPI of image to 600 for fine detail

Some jobs ask for more. Line art, black and white comics, scanned text and fine logos are often printed at 600 DPI so thin lines stay crisp. To increase DPI of image to 600, pick 600 and choose Only the DPI if the picture already has enough pixels.

At 600 DPI every inch needs 600 pixels, so an 8 × 10 inch print needs 4800 × 6000 pixels. Most phone photos do not have that many. For photos, 300 DPI is usually plenty, and doubling the pixels only doubles the file size.

Change DPI of JPG files without re-saving

To change DPI of JPG files, leave the mode on Only the DPI. A JPG can store its DPI in up to three places, and the tool updates all of them that exist, so Windows, Photoshop, Word and print shop software all read the same number.

The compressed image data is copied byte for byte. That means no second round of JPG compression and no quality loss, and the file size stays almost exactly the same. It is also very fast, even for large camera files.

Change DPI of PNG files and keep transparency

To change DPI of PNG files, the tool writes the new value into the pHYs chunk, which is where PNG keeps its resolution. If a PNG has no pHYs chunk yet, one is added. The picture data, the transparency and the colours are not touched.

This is handy for logos, stickers, sublimation designs and print-on-demand artwork, which are often PNG because of the transparent background. The file stays a PNG, keeps its transparency and simply says the new DPI.

A 300 DPI image converter for print

Think of this page as a 300 DPI image converter that is honest about what it does. With Only the DPI it changes the number. With Keep the print size or Set a print size it also changes the pixels, saved at high quality (95%) with the new DPI written in.

It is useful for Amazon KDP book interiors and covers, Etsy printables, Redbubble and other print-on-demand shops, local print shops and photo labs. Each of them talks about DPI, but what they really check is whether you have enough pixels for the print size.

Pictures with no DPI: 72 or 96?

Many pictures carry no DPI at all. Screenshots, pictures saved from websites and files from some apps often show Not set. Programs then guess: Photoshop and Mac apps usually assume 72 DPI, while Windows and Word usually assume 96 DPI.

Under More options you can tell the tool which guess to use. It only matters for Keep the print size, which needs to know the old DPI to keep the paper size the same. Only the DPI and Set a print size work the same either way.

WebP, HEIC, GIF, BMP and TIFF

JPG and PNG keep their format and get the new DPI directly. WebP, HEIC, GIF, BMP and TIFF cannot hold a DPI value that every program reads, so HEIC and AVIF photos are saved as JPG and WebP, GIF, BMP and TIFF as lossless PNG (transparency kept), with the new DPI written in.

iPhone HEIC photos open without any setting. TIFF files are read by our server, because browsers cannot open them, and deleted straight away. If you only want to switch format without any DPI change, HEIC to JPG and PNG to JPG do that job.

Up to 200 pictures at once

Add up to 200 pictures at a time, each up to 100 MB. The list shows every file with its current DPI, pixels and new print size, so you can spot the odd one out before you start. Remove any picture with the small cross.

When the change is done, save files one by one or press Download all to get a single ZIP. By default each name gets a suffix such as -300dpi, so the new files never mix with the originals. You can switch the suffix off under More options.

Amazon KDP, Etsy and print-on-demand

Amazon KDP asks for 300 DPI for book interior images and covers. In practice the check is about pixels: a full-page picture in a 6 × 9 inch book needs about 1800 × 2700 pixels, plus a little extra if it runs to the edge of the page. The table above shows the numbers for other sizes.

Etsy sellers of printable art usually set their files to 300 DPI so buyers get a clean print at home or at a photo lab. Redbubble and similar print-on-demand sites care most about large pixel sizes, so check their upload guide and use Set a print size if you need exact dimensions.

Pictures for Word and InDesign

Word, InDesign, Publisher and other layout programs use the DPI to decide how big a picture appears when you place it. A 3000 pixel wide picture at 72 DPI arrives huge; at 300 DPI it arrives 10 inches wide. Changing only the DPI fixes this without touching the picture.

Once the picture is in your document, you can still scale it. If you plan to put the pages into a PDF, Image to PDF turns a set of pictures into one file, ready to send to a printer.

Photos for printing

Photo labs print most sizes happily from 300 DPI, and many are fine with less for large prints viewed from a distance. Phone photos are usually 4000 pixels wide or more, which is plenty for a 10 × 15 cm or 5 × 7 inch print at 300 DPI.

If a photo is very large and you want a smaller file to email to the lab, set the print size here, then use Compress Image to make the file lighter. To change only the pixel size for the web, Resize Image is the better tool.

What changing the DPI cannot do

Changing the DPI alone does not add detail or sharpness. It changes a number in the file and the size the picture prints at. A blurry picture at 72 DPI is still blurry at 300 DPI, only smaller on paper.

Adding pixels with Keep the print size or Set a print size makes the file bigger, not sharper. The new pixels are smooth guesses from the old ones. This page does not use AI upscaling, and it does not pretend to. For a sharp large print, start from the largest original you can find: the camera file, the first export, or a higher quality scan.

What people use it for

Book covers and interiors

Set pictures to 300 DPI for Amazon KDP and other self-publishing sites, and check the pixels match the trim size.

Printable art for Etsy

Save wall art, planners and cards at 300 DPI so buyers get a clean print at home or at a photo lab.

Print-on-demand designs

Prepare PNG designs for shirts, stickers and mugs at an exact print size, keeping transparency.

Photo prints

Check that phone photos have enough pixels for 10 × 15 cm, 5 × 7 inch or A4 prints before ordering.

Word and InDesign

Make pictures arrive at a sensible size when placed in a document, without changing the picture.

Print shops and forms

Meet a 300 DPI or 600 DPI requirement for flyers, posters, scans and application forms.

Is it safe? Your pictures are not uploaded

Your pictures are not uploaded. The DPI is read and written by your own browser, and the pixels are resampled on your own device when needed. The only exception is TIFF, which browsers cannot open: those files go to our server, are converted, and are deleted straight away.

There is no account and nothing is kept. Close the tab and every picture is gone from memory.

How it works

When you add a picture, the tool reads the first part of the file to find its DPI and pixel size. For JPG it looks at the JFIF header, the EXIF data and Photoshop's resolution block; for PNG it looks at the pHYs chunk.

With Only the DPI, JPG and PNG files are copied as they are and only those small notes are rewritten. In the other modes, or for other formats, the shared image engine on this site resamples the picture to the new pixel size and saves it at 95% quality with the new DPI.

Common problems and fixes

The DPI says Not set

The file has no DPI stored. Pick a DPI and press the button; the new file will have it.

The print size looks tiny

The picture has few pixels. Use a larger original, or accept a smaller print at the DPI you need.

Windows still shows 96 DPI

Some viewers show their own default. Open the file properties or a design app to see the stored value.

My WebP became a PNG

WebP cannot hold a DPI every app reads, so it is saved as a lossless PNG with the new DPI. Transparency is kept.

The file got much bigger

Keep the print size or Set a print size added pixels. Use Only the DPI to keep the file size.

The picture is not sharper

DPI does not add detail. Only a larger original gives a sharper large print.

Tips for the best results

Check the print size column before you press the button. It tells you more than the DPI number does.

Use Only the DPI whenever the pixels are already enough. It is lossless for JPG and PNG and leaves the file size almost unchanged.

For photos, 300 DPI is the common standard. Keep 600 DPI for line art, scans of text and fine logos.

Keep the -300dpi suffix on, so the new files never overwrite or mix with your originals.

DPI words explained

DPI

Dots per inch. In a picture file, the number of pixels meant to fill one inch of paper.

PPI

Pixels per inch. Often used to mean the same thing as DPI for digital pictures.

Pixels

The tiny squares that make up a picture. Width × height in pixels is the real size of the picture.

Print size

Pixels divided by DPI. 3000 pixels at 300 DPI is 10 inches, or 25.4 cm.

Resample

Adding or removing pixels to reach a new pixel size. It changes the picture data.

pHYs, JFIF, EXIF

The places inside PNG and JPG files where the DPI is stored.

Frequently asked questions

How do I change DPI of image to 300?

Add the picture, keep 300 selected and choose Only the DPI. Press the button and download. The pixels stay the same and the file now says 300 DPI.

Can I change DPI of image without changing size?

Yes. Only the DPI keeps the width, height and every pixel exactly the same. Only the printed size changes.

How can I check image DPI online?

Drop the picture on the box. The Now column shows the DPI stored in the file, or Not set if there is none. Nothing changes until you press the button.

How do I increase DPI of image to 300 for printing?

Choose 300 and Only the DPI. If the print size column shows a size you are happy with, you are done. If it is too small, the picture needs more pixels than it has.

Is there a way to change DPI of image online free?

Yes, this page. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no daily limit, and your pictures stay in your browser.

Should I increase DPI of image to 600?

Only for line art, scanned text or fine logos, and only if the picture has enough pixels. For photos, 300 DPI is normally enough.

Can I check image DPI and size at the same time?

Yes. The list shows the stored DPI, the pixels and the print size at your chosen DPI for every picture.

How do I change DPI of JPG files?

Add them and choose Only the DPI. The DPI is rewritten in the JFIF, EXIF and Photoshop data without re-saving, so there is no quality loss.

How do I change DPI of PNG files?

The same way. The new DPI is written into the pHYs chunk and the PNG keeps its pixels and transparency.

What does a 300 DPI image converter actually do?

It sets the DPI note in the file to 300. It can also add or remove pixels to keep or set a print size, but it cannot add real detail.

Does a higher DPI make my picture sharper?

No. DPI alone does not add detail or sharpness. Adding pixels makes the file bigger, not sharper.

What DPI does Amazon KDP need?

300 DPI for interior images and covers. Check that the pixels match the size the picture fills on the page.

What DPI should Etsy printables be?

300 DPI is the usual choice, so buyers get a clean print. Make sure the pixels are enough for the largest size you sell.

Why does my picture say 72 DPI?

Many cameras, phones and apps save 72 DPI by default. It means nothing for screens. Set 300 if a printer asks for it.

What does Not set mean?

The file has no DPI stored. Apps then guess 72 or 96 DPI. You can choose which guess the tool uses under More options.

Which formats can I use?

JPG, PNG, WebP, HEIC, GIF, BMP and TIFF. JPG and PNG keep their format; the others are saved as JPG or PNG with the new DPI.

Are my pictures uploaded?

No. Everything happens in your browser. Only TIFF files are converted on our server and deleted straight away.

How many pictures can I change at once?

Up to 200 pictures of up to 100 MB each, downloaded one by one or together as a ZIP.

Will the file names change?

By default a suffix such as -300dpi is added. You can turn it off under More options.

Is DPI the same as PPI?

For digital pictures, people use both words for the same thing: how many pixels fit into one inch when printed.

Will Word or InDesign show a different size?

Yes. These programs use the DPI to size a placed picture, so a higher DPI makes it appear smaller on the page, with the same pixels.
