People often ask what is a HEIC file, and the short answer is: a photo saved in the High Efficiency Image Container format. Apple made it the standard camera format on iPhone and iPad in 2017, because it stores a photo in about half the space of a JPG at the same quality.

Inside, a HEIC file holds the picture compressed with HEVC, the same technology used for 4K video, plus the photo details and sometimes extra parts such as a depth map for portrait mode or several frames. That efficiency is great on the phone, but many computers, websites and apps still cannot read it.

This converter opens HEIC photos with libheif, the same open source library used by GIMP and many photo apps, running directly in your browser. It handles the photos newer iPhones take, including large 48 megapixel shots, 10-bit HDR photos and pictures made of many tiles.

On Safari the browser's own decoder is used first, which is the fastest of all. Photos come out upright, at full resolution, with the colours you saw on the phone, and the conversion runs in the background so the page stays smooth even with hundreds of photos.

Convert to JPG when you need to share iPhone photos with someone on Windows or Android, upload them to a website or form that refuses HEIC, print them at a photo shop, add them to a document or slide, or edit them in an older program.

Keep the HEIC originals on your phone if you have the space: they are smaller and hold more colour information. The JPG copies are for sharing and compatibility, and you can make them again at any time.

If Windows says it cannot open HEIC file attachments, or a website rejects your photo, the file itself is fine; the program simply does not understand the format. Converting it to JPG is the quickest fix and works for everyone you share it with.

Windows needs two extensions from the Microsoft Store to show HEIC photos, and one of them is paid. Older Mac software, many Android phones, most websites and printing services cannot read the format at all. A JPG copy avoids every one of those problems.

On Windows 10 and 11, open this page in Edge, Chrome or Firefox and drop the photos in. A HEIC to JPG on Windows conversion here needs no extension, no Store purchase and no software install, so it also works on office and school computers.

To make the camera save JPG from now on, open Settings, Camera, Formats and choose Most Compatible. Photos then take more space, which is why many people keep High Efficiency on and convert only the photos they share.

Macs open HEIC photos, but many apps, websites and the people you send them to do not. In Preview you can export one photo at a time as JPEG. In Photos, Export lets you choose JPEG for several photos, though it is easy to export the wrong size or lose the original dates.

This page does the same job in any browser, keeps the date taken, and lets you set a size limit or an exact size for a whole batch at once.

Many Android phones cannot show HEIC photos sent from an iPhone, and some Samsung phones save HEIF themselves when High efficiency pictures is switched on in the camera settings. Open this page in Chrome on the phone, tap Select images and convert; the JPG files appear in Downloads.

Phones have less memory than computers, so very large photos may be scaled to a size the phone can handle; the page tells you when that happens.

There are several ways to get photos from an iPhone to a computer. With a cable, Windows shows the phone as a camera and copies the HEIC files as they are. AirDrop to a Mac sends HEIC too. In Settings, Photos, Transfer to Mac or PC, the Automatic option makes the iPhone hand over JPG copies when it connects by cable, while Keep Originals sends HEIC.

If you already have a folder of HEIC files, there is no need to copy them again: add the folder here, convert, and unpack the ZIP next to the originals.

From iCloud Photos on the web, select the photos and choose Download; the options let you pick Unmodified Original, which gives HEIC files, or Most Compatible, which gives JPG. Google Takeout and Google Photos downloads also keep iPhone photos as HEIC.

Either way, a folder full of HEIC downloads converts here in one batch, with the original dates kept so the copies sort correctly in any gallery.

A HEIC to JPG high quality conversion at 92%, the default, looks identical to the original photo. JPG files are usually a little larger than HEIC because the format is older and less efficient, typically 1.5 to 2.5 MB for a 12 megapixel photo.

Choose a lower quality only when the files must be small; 85% still looks excellent for sharing. The before and after slider shows exactly how each photo looks, so you can check before you download.

JPG and JPEG are the same format with two spellings, so a HEIC to JPEG conversion is exactly the same thing. The files are saved with the .jpg extension, which every app, website and device recognises.

If a form insists on .jpeg, simply rename the downloaded file; nothing inside needs to change.

HEIF is the name of the format, and HEIC is the most common kind of HEIF file. Some phones and cameras, including many Samsung, Huawei and Sony models, save files with the .heif extension. A HEIF to JPG conversion works exactly the same way here.

Both extensions are recognised in upper and lower case, so IMG_1234.HEIC from an iPhone and photo.heif from an Android phone can be converted together in the same batch.

Every iPhone photo carries hidden details: the date and time it was taken, the camera, the lens and its settings, and usually the exact place where it was taken. Most converters throw all of it away, so the photos lose their dates and end up in the wrong order in Google Photos, Windows Photos or a family album.

Here the date taken, camera and lens are kept by default, while the location is removed so you do not reveal where you live by sharing a photo. Under More options choose Keep all to keep the location too, for example for your own archive or travel map, or Remove to strip every detail.

Add up to 500 photos at once, or a whole folder. As a bulk HEIC converter it shares the work across the cores of your processor, so a hundred iPhone photos usually take well under two minutes, and the same settings apply to all of them.

Download all puts every JPG into one ZIP, keeping the folder structure when you added a folder. File names stay the same with the .jpg extension, or get -converted added if you prefer.

Upload forms and email often limit the size of a photo. Choose Keep under a size and type the number of KB, or pick 100 KB, 200 KB, 500 KB or 1 MB, and each photo gets the highest quality that still fits. When the limit is very small, choose a smaller size under Size as well, because fewer pixels shrink a file much more than lower quality. For JPGs you already have, Compress Image squeezes them further.

To make a set of photos lighter for sharing, choose Longest side and 2048 pixels: each photo becomes a few hundred KB and still looks sharp on any screen.

Use Download all to get one ZIP that is easy to attach, or save individual photos. The people you send them to can open the JPGs on any device without installing anything.

Resize while converting to make files smaller and to meet size rules. Longest side scales large photos down without enlarging small ones. Percentage scales every photo by the same amount. Exact size makes every photo the same width and height, with fit inside, fill and crop, or stretch.

When a photo is fitted inside an exact size, the empty space around it is filled with the background colour you chose, white by default.

Newer iPhones save photos in HDR, with brighter highlights than an ordinary screen can show. JPG has no standard way to hold that extra brightness, so photos are converted to standard range in sRGB, the colour space every screen, browser and printer expects. They look the way most people will see them anyway.

Live Photos are saved as a HEIC still picture plus a short video. Only the still picture is in the HEIC file, so that is what becomes the JPG. Portrait depth maps and other extra parts are not needed for a JPG and are left out.

DPI tells printing software how large to print a photo; it does not change the pixels. Choose 300 DPI under More options for photo labs and print shops. The value is written into the JPG, so print services and design programs read it correctly.

A standard 12 megapixel iPhone photo prints sharply at 300 DPI up to about 10 by 13 inches, and a 48 megapixel photo much larger.

A photo library is meant to last for decades. HEIC is well supported by Apple, but JPG is the format every computer, phone, printer and program from the last thirty years can read, and will very likely still read in thirty more. Many people keep the HEIC originals and a JPG copy of the whole library for that reason.

For an archive, choose Keep all under Photo details so the date, camera and location stay with each JPG, keep the quality at 92% or higher, and do not resize. Store the copies in a second place, such as an external drive or another cloud service.

Your photos are not uploaded. Opening, converting, resizing and zipping all happen in your browser, on your own device. The only thing downloaded is the decoder itself, once, which your browser then keeps.

Photos are private by nature, often showing family, home and documents, so a converter that never receives them is the safest kind. The location is removed by default for the same reason.

Each photo is read by your browser and opened with the HEIC decoder in a background worker. The primary picture is taken, rotation and mirroring stored in the file are applied, and the pixels are drawn onto an invisible canvas, scaled smoothly if you chose a new size.

The canvas is saved as a JPG at the quality you chose, or the highest quality under your size limit. Then the photo details are copied from the original, with the orientation corrected, the new size written in and the location removed unless you asked to keep it.

Keep the default 92% quality for photos you care about, and use 85% for sharing.

Keep the date taken so your gallery sorts the JPG copies correctly.
