People often ask what is a WebP file, and the short answer is: a picture format made by Google in 2010 to make websites faster. A WebP picture is usually 25 to 35% smaller than the same picture as a JPG or PNG, and it can be lossy like JPG, lossless like PNG, transparent and even animated.

That is why so many websites, online shops and Google Images now serve WebP. The trouble starts when you save one of those pictures: older programs, many photo editors, printers, upload forms and some phones still expect JPG.

Websites switched to WebP because every kilobyte counts: smaller pictures load faster, use less mobile data and help pages rank better in search. Google's PageSpeed tools recommend modern formats such as WebP and AVIF, and most content systems and image services now create WebP copies automatically.

Browsers ask the server which formats they understand, so the same picture address can send WebP to Chrome and JPG to an old program. That is why a picture you saved can be WebP even though the page said .jpg.

This converter is built for the WebP pictures people actually have: photos saved from websites, product images, screenshots, stickers with transparent backgrounds and short animations. Each one comes out as a clean JPG with the colours you saw on screen.

You choose the quality, the background colour for transparent parts and, if you like, a maximum file size; the converter finds the best quality that fits. Resizing, print resolution and grayscale are built in, and hundreds of pictures convert at once.

Convert to JPG when a program or website refuses WebP, when you want to print a picture, edit it in an older app, attach it to a form, or send it to someone whose phone or computer cannot show WebP.

Keep WebP when the picture is only for your own website, because it is smaller. For logos and graphics that must stay transparent, convert to PNG instead, since JPG has no transparency.

If you cannot open WebP file downloads, the file is fine; the program simply does not understand the format. Windows Photos, current browsers and recent versions of Photoshop and GIMP open WebP, but older Paint, Photo Viewer, Word, many printing services and older editors do not.

Converting to JPG is the quickest fix and works for everyone you share the picture with, on any device, without installing anything.

When you right-click a picture on a website and choose Save image as, the browser often saves it as WebP, because that is what the website sent. There is no reliable way to save WebP as JPG straight from the page in most browsers.

Pictures downloaded from Google Images, Pinterest, online shops and news sites are very often WebP, even when the address ends in .jpg. A WebP image to JPG conversion here works no matter what the file is called, because the picture itself is read, not the name.

Mixed folders convert in one batch: WebP, PNG, AVIF, GIF, BMP, HEIC and SVG pictures all become JPG with the same settings.

A WebP to JPG high quality conversion at 92%, the default, looks identical to the original. JPG files are usually somewhat larger than WebP because the format is older and less efficient; that is normal and nothing is lost.

Lower the quality only when files must be small; 85% still looks excellent for sharing. The before and after slider shows exactly how each picture looks, so you can check before you download.

JPG and JPEG are the same format with two spellings, so a WebP to JPEG conversion is exactly the same thing. The files are saved with the .jpg extension, which every app, website and device recognises.

If a form insists on .jpeg, simply rename the downloaded file; nothing inside needs to change.

Many WebP pictures, such as stickers, product cut-outs and logos, have transparent areas. JPG cannot store transparency, and careless converters fill those areas with black. Here they are filled with white by default, the way shops, documents and slides expect.

Choose Black or any other colour under Background for transparent areas to match a page or a brand colour. Soft edges and shadows blend smoothly into the chosen colour, with no dark halo.

WebP comes in two kinds. Lossy WebP works like JPG and is used for most photos on the web. Lossless WebP works like PNG, keeping every pixel, and is used for graphics, screenshots and transparent images.

Both kinds convert the same way. For lossless pictures with sharp text or flat colours, keep the quality at 90% or more so edges stay crisp, or convert to PNG if every pixel must stay exact.

An animated WebP works like a GIF: several frames shown one after another. JPG holds one still picture, so the first frame of such a picture is saved as the JPG, with any transparent parts filled with your background colour.

This is handy for thumbnails and previews of WhatsApp and Telegram stickers or animations saved from websites. To keep the movement, keep the original file.

Add up to 500 pictures at once, or a whole folder. As a bulk WebP converter it shares the work across the cores of your processor, so a hundred pictures usually take well under a minute, and the same settings apply to all of them.

Download all puts every JPG into one ZIP, keeping the folder structure when you added a folder. File names stay the same with the .jpg extension, or get -converted added if you prefer.

Converted files keep the original name with .jpg at the end, so holiday.webp becomes holiday.jpg. Pictures with the same name from different folders are numbered so nothing is overwritten in the ZIP.

Tick Add -converted to file names under More options to keep the converted copies apart from the originals when you save them in the same folder.

Upload forms and email often limit the size of a picture. Choose Keep under a size and type the number of KB, or pick 100 KB, 200 KB, 500 KB or 1 MB, and each picture gets the highest quality that still fits. When the limit is very small, choose a smaller size under Size as well.

To make pictures lighter for sharing, choose Longest side and 1920 pixels. For JPGs you already have, Compress Image squeezes them further.

Resize while converting to meet size rules. Longest side scales large pictures down without enlarging small ones. Percentage scales every picture by the same amount. Exact size makes every picture the same width and height, with fit inside, fill and crop, or stretch.

For more control, such as sizes in centimetres, social media presets or crop positions, use Resize Image, which also keeps the original format.

On an iPhone or Android phone, open this page in Safari or Chrome and tap Select images. Pictures saved from apps and websites are often WebP, and many apps and forms will not accept them; the JPG copies work everywhere.

When the files are ready, tap Download and they appear in your downloads or Files app, ready to share.

DPI tells printing software how large to print a picture; it does not change the pixels. Choose 300 DPI under More options for print shops and photo labs. The value is written into the JPG, so print services and design programs read it correctly.

Pictures from websites are often small, around 1000 to 2000 pixels wide, which prints sharply only up to a few inches at 300 DPI.

Hidden details such as camera data and location are removed by default, so the JPG you share reveals less about you; you can keep them under More options.

Each picture is read by your browser, which has a built-in WebP decoder, and drawn onto an invisible canvas filled first with the background colour you chose. Transparent areas take that colour and soft edges blend into it; large reductions are done in smooth steps.

The canvas is then saved as a JPG at the chosen quality, or the highest quality under your size limit, with the DPI and, if you like, the photo details written in. The work runs in background workers, so the page stays smooth even with hundreds of pictures.

Keep the default 92% quality for pictures you care about, and 85% for sharing.
