JPG and PNG are the two most common picture formats, and they are good at different things. JPG is made for photos: it keeps files small by throwing away detail the eye barely notices. PNG is made for graphics: it stores every pixel exactly and can have see-through areas. This JPG to PNG converter turns one into the other with care, and adds the extras that make PNG worth having.

Most free converters only change the file type. Here you can also clear a plain background, resize to an exact size for a website or a form, set the print resolution, reduce the colours for a smaller file and convert hundreds of pictures at once, all without installing anything or uploading your photos.

Convert to PNG when a picture must stay sharp after editing, when it needs a transparent background, or when a website, app or form only accepts PNG. Logos, icons, signatures, screenshots, diagrams and pictures that will be placed on coloured backgrounds all belong in PNG.

Keep JPG for ordinary photos that are only shared or viewed, because PNG files of photos are larger. If file size matters more than anything else, Compress Image can make a JPG smaller instead, and PNG to JPG goes the other way.

JPG cannot store transparency, so a logo saved as JPG always sits in a white or coloured box. A JPG to PNG transparent conversion removes that box. Choose Remove background: the plain colour around the subject is found automatically from the edges of the picture and becomes see-through, while the same colour inside the subject, such as white text in a logo, is kept.

Choose Remove a colour everywhere when the holes inside letters or shapes should be clear too. Tolerance controls how close a colour must be to be removed, which matters for JPG files because compression leaves slightly uneven colours around edges, and Smooth edges keeps the outline soft and takes the old background's tint out of it, so there is no white fringe on a dark page.

Turning a white background to transparent is the most common reason people convert to PNG. Logos for a website, a signature for a document, a product photographed on a white sheet or a scanned stamp all look better without the white box. Leave Colour to remove on Automatic, or choose White, and convert.

For photos of people, animals or objects on a busy or real-world background, colour removal is not enough. Remove Background uses AI to cut out the subject, and gives you a PNG too.

A logo that only exists as a JPG is a common problem for small businesses. Start with the largest version you have, ideally on a plain white or single-colour background. Add it here, choose Remove background, and keep Smooth edges on. If a thin light outline remains, raise the tolerance a few points and convert again.

Check the result in the before and after view: the checks show where the picture is see-through. For a website header, choose Longest side and a size such as 600 pixels; for print, keep the original size and choose 300 DPI. Save the PNG as your master logo file, and you will never need the JPG again.

To put a handwritten signature on a document, sign on plain white paper with a dark pen, photograph it straight from above in good light and crop it close. Add the photo here and choose Remove background with Automatic colour. Grayscale or Black & white under More options makes the ink even and the paper cleaner.

The PNG can then be placed in Word, Google Docs or a PDF editor, and it sits on the page without a white box. Keep the file private: a signature image should only be used on documents you are entitled to sign.

PNG is lossless, so a JPG to PNG high quality conversion keeps every pixel of the JPG exactly as it is: no blur, no new compression marks, no change of colours. The result looks identical to the original at any zoom, and further editing and saving never makes it worse, unlike repeated JPG saves.

Converting cannot add detail that the JPG no longer has, so a heavily compressed or tiny JPG stays as it was. To print larger, resize with care, and use 300 DPI so print software sizes it correctly. The PNG is written with the best compression filters for each row, so it is as small as a lossless file can be.

JPG and JPEG are the same format with two spellings, from the days when file extensions had three letters. Converting JPEG to PNG works exactly like JPG, and so do the other variants: JPE, JFIF, PJPEG and PJP files all open and convert.

Photos straight from a camera or phone often carry an orientation tag instead of being stored upright. The picture is turned the right way up before conversion, so your PNG never comes out sideways.

Pictures saved from some browsers, WhatsApp Web and Windows sometimes get the .jfif extension, which many apps and upload forms refuse. A JFIF to PNG conversion here fixes that in seconds: add the file and press Convert to PNG.

JFIF is simply JPG with a different name, so nothing is lost in the conversion. If you only need the file to be accepted as a JPG, renaming it to .jpg also works on most computers.

This page is not limited to JPG. You can turn any image to PNG: iPhone HEIC photos, WebP and AVIF pictures saved from websites, old BMP files, GIF frames, SVG drawings, and TIFF and ICO files, which are opened on our server and labelled when that happens. A mixed folder converts in one batch.

SVG drawings are drawn sharp at a large size before saving, and transparency in PNG, WebP and GIF files is kept exactly, so logos and icons stay clean.

On an iPhone or Android phone, open this page in Safari or Chrome, tap Select images and choose photos from your gallery. iPhone HEIC photos work without changing any settings. A photo to PNG conversion on a phone is handy when an app or a printing service asks for PNG, or when you want a transparent background for a sticker.

When the PNG files are ready, tap Download, or Copy to paste a single picture into another app. Phones have less memory than computers, so very large pictures are scaled to a size the phone can handle, and the page tells you when that happens.

Every computer can save as PNG in a basic way. On Windows, open the picture in Paint, choose File, Save as, then PNG picture. On a Mac, open it in Preview, choose File, Export, and pick PNG as the format. Phones usually need an app.

Those built-in tools handle one picture at a time and cannot remove a background, resize to an exact size or set the DPI. This page does all of that for hundreds of pictures at once, on any device, without installing anything.

Screenshots shared through some chat apps and social networks are recompressed as JPG, which blurs small text and adds grey speckles around letters. Converting them back to PNG stops any further loss and makes them safe to crop, annotate and save again, although the first round of blur cannot be undone.

For documentation, help articles and bug reports, PNG is the right format for screenshots: text stays crisp, flat colours stay flat, and Smaller file under More options keeps the size close to a JPG because screenshots have few colours.

Apps, games and websites need icons at exact pixel sizes, usually with a transparent background. Choose Exact size, for example 512 by 512 for an app store icon or 180 by 180 for an Apple touch icon, and Fit inside so the whole picture is kept with transparent space around it. Remove background clears the old white square at the same time.

Convert the same picture several times at different sizes for a full icon set, or use the Favicon Generator for the small icons a browser tab needs.

To convert to PNG in bulk, add up to 500 pictures at once, or a whole folder with Add a whole folder. They are converted several at a time using the spare cores of your processor, so a hundred photos usually take well under a minute, and the same settings apply to all of them.

Download all puts every PNG in one ZIP, keeping the folder structure when you added a folder. File names stay the same with the .png extension, or get -converted added if you prefer.

Resize while converting to save a separate step. Longest side scales big photos down to, for example, 1920 pixels without ever enlarging small ones. Percentage scales every picture by the same amount. Exact size makes every picture the same width and height, which is what marketplaces, profile pictures and app stores ask for, with a choice of fitting the picture inside, filling and cropping, or stretching.

When a picture is fitted inside an exact size, the empty space around it stays transparent in the PNG, so it can be placed on any background.

DPI, dots per inch, tells printing and design software how large to print a picture. It does not change the pixels. Choose 300 DPI for print shops, posters and documents, 150 for everyday printing, or 72 or 96 for screens. The value is written into the PNG file itself, so Word, Photoshop and print services read it correctly.

To print a picture at a given size and 300 DPI, it needs enough pixels: an A4 page needs about 2480 by 3508 pixels. Resize can make a picture smaller but cannot add real detail.

A PNG made from a JPG photo is usually several times larger than the JPG, because PNG keeps every pixel without loss. That is normal and is the price of perfect quality and transparency. For logos, icons and screenshots, which have fewer colours, PNG files are often small.

When a smaller PNG is needed, choose Smaller file under More options. The picture is reduced to its best 256 colours or fewer, often making the file 60 to 80% smaller while looking the same, which is ideal for websites and apps.

Your pictures are not uploaded. Reading, converting, removing the background and zipping all happen in your browser, on your own device, using code that runs in this page. Only TIFF and ICO files, which browsers cannot open, are sent to our image server to be read, and they are deleted straight away.

Because nothing is stored, there is no account, no history and nothing for anyone else to see. The page keeps working even if your connection drops after it has loaded.

Each picture is opened by your browser, turned upright and drawn onto an invisible canvas at its final size, with smooth step-by-step scaling for big reductions. For a transparent background, the colour along the edges is measured and a fill spreads inward from the edges, clearing only matching pixels it can reach, with a soft band for smooth edges.

The pixels are then written as a PNG by a compact encoder that chooses the best filter for each row and an exact palette when a picture has 256 colours or fewer. The work runs in background workers, one per spare processor core, so the page stays responsive even with hundreds of pictures.

Use the largest, original JPG you have: PNG keeps quality but cannot restore what JPG compression removed.

For logos and signatures, photograph or scan them on plain white paper in even light, then use Remove background.

Choose 300 DPI for anything that will be printed, and check the pixel size is big enough for the print size.

Use Smaller file for website icons and screenshots, Lossless for anything you will edit again.
