How to Convert an Image to Grayscale

There is no single correct way to turn colour into grey, which is the thing almost every online converter hides from you. Each pixel has three values and the result needs one, so something has to decide how much each channel contributes — and different formulas produce visibly different photographs. The default here, BT.709, weights green at roughly seventy per cent because that is closest to how human vision works, producing the most natural-looking result. BT.601 is the older broadcast standard and gives reds a little more presence, which some people prefer for skin tones. A simple average treats all three channels equally, which sounds fair but makes foliage look too dark and skies too pale, because it ignores how the eye actually responds. Lightness takes the midpoint between the brightest and darkest channel, producing punchier contrast at the cost of some tonal separation. Why Green Matters Most

Human vision isn't balanced

The eye has far more receptors tuned to green wavelengths than to red or blue. A pure green patch looks considerably brighter than a pure blue one of the same intensity, which is why luminance formulas weight it so heavily.

What that means in practice

A simple average makes green foliage too dark and blue skies too light, because it pretends all three channels look equally bright. Luminance methods keep the tonal relationships you actually perceived when you took the photo.

Troubleshooting

The result looks flat

Skies came out too pale

You're likely using the average method. Switch to BT.709, which weights blue far less heavily.

Some colour is still visible

The intensity slider isn't at 100. Push it to full for complete desaturation.
