Pigment pooling, the missing detail

How to make a photo look painted rather than filtered
Most watercolour filters are a blur and a posterise, and they fail for a reason you can see immediately if you put one next to an actual painting. In a photograph that has been smoothed and flattened, every region is uniformly coloured right up to its boundary and then the next region starts. In a watercolour, the inside of a wash is lighter than its edge, because the water carries pigment outward as it dries and deposits it at the boundary. That darker rim exists around every wet area a painter has laid down, and your eye reads its presence as paint and its absence as software. Getting it into the picture is what the pooling control does, and it is the first thing to turn up rather than the last. Everything else is about how loosely you want to paint. Flattening decides how much photographic detail survives; low values keep the picture readable and high values reduce it to broad areas, which is what a fast, loose study looks like. Colour levels then decide how many distinct washes there are, and fewer is usually braver and better. The two supporting controls are bleed, which lets colour creep slightly past its boundary as wet paint does, and paper grain, which is applied more strongly to the light areas because that is where real paper shows through a thin wash and where a dark one would hide it. Subject matters as much as settings here: simple shapes with a clean background paint well, and a busy street scene turns into mud no matter what you set.

What makes a wash look like a wash
Pigment dries at the edge
When a painter lays a wet wash on paper, the water spreads to the limit of the wet area and stops. As it evaporates, more water leaves from the thin edge than from the middle, and capillary flow carries pigment outward to replace it. The pigment arrives at the boundary and stays there, so the finished wash is lighter in the middle and noticeably darker at its rim. Painters call it a bloom or a hard edge, and it is present in essentially every watercolour ever made. This tool reproduces it by measuring where colour changes in the flattened image and darkening those boundaries in proportion. It is easy to check that it is doing something real. On a test image containing a hard boundary between two flat washes, the boundary pixels came back 26 percent darker than the darker of the two washes, while with pooling switched off they matched it exactly. The rim also scales with how different the two washes are, which is correct: a boundary between two similar tones got 10 percent darker where a strong tonal step got 26 percent, just as a painter sees a heavier bloom where a wash meets a much lighter one.
Median, not blur, and grain that knows where it is
Flattening a photograph into washes needs the detail gone but the boundaries intact, which rules out a blur. A median filter takes the middle value of each small neighbourhood, so a stray pixel is discarded outright while a genuine boundary between two regions survives, because most of the neighbourhood still sits on one side of it. That is why several median passes give flat areas with crisp edges rather than a smear. The paper grain is the other detail worth getting right. Real paper texture is visible through a thin, light wash and almost invisible under a dark one, because the pigment covers it. The grain here is therefore weighted by how light each area is, and it is generated as smooth noise on a coarse grid rather than per pixel, because per-pixel randomness looks like television static and paper has structure at the scale of a few pixels.

Turn pooling up early. It is the detail that makes the result read as paint, and everything else is supporting it.
Fewer colour levels is usually braver and better. Twelve or fewer starts to look like a painting rather than a processed photo.

Troubleshooting
It looks like a blurred photo
Raise the pooling and lower the colour levels. Without the edge rim and with too many levels, that is precisely what it is.
The result is muddy
Your subject is probably too busy. Watercolour works by simplification, and a scene with no dominant shapes has nothing to simplify into.
The grain is invisible
It is weighted toward the light areas, so a dark photo will show very little. That is how real paper behaves under a heavy wash.
Edges look too dark and heavy
Pooling is too high for the number of levels you have. Either lower the pooling or raise the levels so there are fewer hard boundaries.

Oil paint builds the picture from opaque strokes that sit on top of each other, so the tool finds a dominant colour per region. Watercolour is transparent washes on white paper, so the tool flattens into areas and darkens their edges.
Can I process a batch?
