How to posterize an image well

Posterizing fails in a specific and predictable way, and once you have seen why, the fix is obvious. The operation snaps every value to the nearest of a small set of allowed levels, so what matters is not the photo's colour but where its tones sit. A soft, evenly lit image has most of its pixels bunched between about 90 and 170; posterize that to four levels and almost everything lands on the same one or two, so the result is a nearly blank shape with a bit of edge detail and none of the graphic punch you wanted. That is why contrast runs before quantising here rather than being something you are expected to do elsewhere first: pushing the tones outward toward black and white is what gives each level something to catch. The second decision is dithering, and it is not simply on or off. Turn it off when you want genuinely flat areas — a stencil, a screen-print separation, a logo treatment — because clean unbroken colour is the entire point and any texture ruins it. Turn Floyd-Steinberg on when the image has large smooth regions like skies or skin that would otherwise break into obvious bands, because it scatters the error so finely that your eye reassembles a gradient from four colours. Choose ordered dithering when the visible regularity is the aesthetic, since its 4 by 4 crosshatch is instantly recognisable as retro. Finally, export PNG. Posterized images are flat areas with hard boundaries, which is precisely what PNG stores efficiently and precisely what JPEG destroys, adding ringing along every edge you just worked to create.

How dithering beats banding

Spreading the rounding error

When a pixel at 100 is forced to the nearest allowed value of 85, an error of 15 is thrown away, and because every pixel in a smooth area throws away a similar error, they all land on the same level and you see a band. Floyd-Steinberg keeps that error instead and adds it to the neighbours that have not been processed yet — about 44 percent to the pixel on the right and the rest to the row below. Those neighbours are then nudged over the threshold and snap to a different level, so the two levels alternate in a fine pattern and your eye averages them into the tone that was actually there.

Why the palette does not grow

It is natural to assume dithering must be adding intermediate shades, but it is not. We tested a smooth 64-step gradient posterized to four levels: the output contained exactly four distinct values with dithering off, and exactly four with it on. Every pixel still holds one of the allowed values. What changes is the arrangement — a region that would have been a solid block of one level becomes a mix of two, and at normal viewing distance your visual system does the blending. That is also why dithering works against file compression: the fine pattern is much harder to encode than a flat block.

Six tips worth knowing

If the result looks nearly blank, raise pre-quantise contrast. That is the symptom of every pixel snapping to the same one or two levels.

Turn dithering off for stencils, logos and screen-print separations. Flat unbroken colour is the whole point and any texture defeats it.

Turn Floyd-Steinberg on when there is a large sky or a broad area of skin. Those are where hard bands show worst.

Export PNG, not JPEG. JPEG adds ringing along every hard boundary posterizing creates, and PNG is usually smaller for this kind of image anyway.

Greyscale first, then two or three levels, gives clean tone separations for print work. Adjust contrast to place the separations where you want them.

Dithering makes files larger, not smaller. If size matters more than smooth gradients, leave it off and accept the banding.

Troubleshooting

The image went almost completely flat

Your photo has a narrow tonal range, so nearly every pixel snapped to one level. Raise pre-quantise contrast until the levels spread out.

Hard bands across the sky

That is banding, and it is what dithering exists to fix. Switch on Floyd-Steinberg, or raise the level count.

Flat areas look mottled after saving

You exported to JPEG, which cannot store hard-edged flat colour cleanly. Switch the output to PNG.

The subject disappeared into the background

They were similar brightness, and posterizing has nothing left to separate them with. You need a source with real tonal separation.

Frequently asked questions

What does posterizing an image do?

It reduces the number of distinct brightness values each colour channel can take. Instead of 256 possible reds, you might allow only four, so every red in the image snaps to the nearest of those four. The result is flat areas of solid colour with visible boundaries between them, which is the look of screen printing and vintage poster art.

How many levels should I use?

Two gives a hard, graphic two-tone per channel. Three or four gives the classic poster look and is where most people land. Above about eight the effect becomes subtle, and by twelve it mostly reads as slight banding rather than a deliberate style. The right number depends entirely on whether you want it obvious.

How many colours does that actually produce?

Levels apply per channel, so the total palette is levels cubed. Four levels means up to 64 possible colours, three means 27, and two means 8. Switching on greyscale collapses that to just the number of levels, so two levels in greyscale is pure black and white.

What is dithering and why would I want it?

Dithering scatters the rounding error across neighbouring pixels so your eye blends the few available levels back into an apparent gradient. Without it, a smooth sky posterized to four levels becomes four hard bands. With it, the same four levels are mixed in a fine pattern that reads as a continuous transition — using no extra colours at all.

What is the difference between the two dither modes?

Floyd-Steinberg pushes each pixel's error into the pixels not yet processed, which produces an organic, slightly random-looking texture that hides banding very well. Ordered dithering uses a fixed 4 by 4 matrix, giving a regular crosshatch pattern that is unmistakably retro and reproduces the look of early games and printed halftones.

Does dithering add colours that were not allowed?

No, and that is the point. We verified this on a smooth gradient: posterized to four levels, the output contained exactly four distinct values whether dithering was on or off. Dithering changes where those four values are placed, not what they are. The apparent extra shades come entirely from your eye averaging neighbouring pixels.

Why is there a contrast slider?

Because posterizing depends on where your tones sit. A flat, hazy photo has most pixels clustered in the middle of the range, so they all snap to the same one or two levels and the result is nearly blank. Raising contrast first spreads them across the full range so each level actually gets used. It runs before quantising for exactly that reason.

Are the endpoints preserved?

Yes. The quantisation is built so that pure black stays 0 and pure white stays 255 at every level count. With four levels the allowed values are 0, 85, 170 and 255 — evenly spaced and anchored at both ends, so your blacks stay black and your whites stay white.

Are my images uploaded to a server?

No. Quantisation and dithering both run in your browser using the canvas API. Nothing is sent anywhere, and the tool keeps working if your connection drops after the page has loaded.

Will posterizing make my file smaller?

In PNG, usually a lot — large flat areas of identical colour compress extremely well, and a posterized image without dithering can be a fraction of the original size. With dithering the fine pattern works against compression, so the saving is smaller. In JPEG the effect is less predictable, because JPEG handles hard edges poorly.

Which format should I export?

PNG, in almost every case. Posterized images are made of flat areas with hard boundaries, which is exactly what PNG is designed for and exactly what JPEG handles worst — JPEG will add ringing around every boundary and mottle your flat areas.

Can I use this to make a stencil or screen print separation?

Yes. Set greyscale on with two or three levels and no dithering, and you get clean, hard-edged tone separations that can be traced or cut. Raise contrast first so the separations land where you want them rather than where the photo happened to sit.

Which file formats are supported?

Which photos posterize well?

Images with strong shapes, clear subject separation and a good spread of tones. Portraits against a plain background, architecture and bold silhouettes all work. Busy scenes with lots of similar mid-tones tend to collapse into an unreadable mass, because once you have only three or four levels there is nothing left to separate the elements.

Can I undo posterizing?

No. Reducing 256 levels to four discards information permanently — every value that snapped to 85 is now indistinguishable from every other. Keep your original file; the tool never modifies it, but the downloaded result cannot be reversed.

Does the tool add a watermark or need an account?
