How to make a duotone that actually works

The single thing that decides whether a duotone looks designed or muddy is not the palette, it is the tonal range of the photo you started from, and this catches almost everyone the first time. A duotone maps brightness onto your gradient, so if your source is a soft, evenly lit image where almost every pixel sits between about 90 and 170, then every pixel lands in the middle third of your ramp — you will see a wash of whatever colour is halfway between your two picks, and neither of the colours you actually chose will appear anywhere in the result. The fix is the contrast slider, and it belongs before the mapping for exactly this reason: pushing the pixels outward toward black and white first is what lets them reach the ends of your gradient afterwards. Which photos to feed it follows from the same logic. Strong silhouettes, clear subject-background separation and real shadows work, because those images already have somewhere for each end of the ramp to land; a busy scene where everything is a similar mid-tone will collapse into an unreadable mass no matter what colours you pick, because once you discard hue there is nothing left to separate a person from the hedge behind them. On palette choice, the reliable pattern is a dark, fairly desaturated shadow and a light, warm highlight; two colours of similar brightness produce a flat result because the ramp has nowhere to travel. And if the outcome feels too graphic for what you need, do not abandon it — drop blend to around 65 and you get a colour grade instead, with the original detail still reading through.

How the mapping works

Brightness first, colour second

Every pixel is reduced to a single brightness value using the Rec. 709 weighting, which counts green far more heavily than blue because that is how human vision responds. That number, from 0 to 255, becomes a position on your gradient. All of the original hue information is discarded at this step, which is why a duotone cannot be undone: a red shirt and a blue shirt of the same brightness become the same colour, and nothing in the output records which was which.

Why a lookup table

There are only 256 possible brightness values, so instead of running the contrast maths and the gradient interpolation for every pixel, the tool computes the answer for all 256 once and stores it. Every pixel then costs a single array lookup. That is why dragging a slider stays smooth on a large photo, and why a 50 megapixel image takes essentially the same colour maths as a thumbnail — only the per-pixel copy scales with size.

Six tips worth knowing

Pick two colours with clearly different brightness. Two mid-tone colours give a flat result because the ramp has nowhere to travel.

If the image looks like one wash of colour, raise pre-mapping contrast. That is the symptom of every pixel landing in the middle of your gradient.

Use the swap button to test the inverse instantly. A dark-to-light ramp and its reverse often suit completely different photos.

Blend around 65 percent turns a graphic duotone into a colour grade, which is usually what you want for photography that still has to read as photography.

In tritone, move the midpoint rather than changing colours when the balance feels wrong. It is the control that decides which colour dominates.

Export as PNG for graphics and headers. Duotones have large flat areas that JPEG turns blotchy at moderate quality.

Troubleshooting

The result is one flat colour

Your photo has a narrow tonal range, so every pixel lands in the middle of the gradient. Raise pre-mapping contrast until both ends appear.

The subject vanished into the background

They were similar brightness, and duotone discards hue. Nothing in the palette will fix that — you need a source with real separation.

It looks too harsh for a photo

Lower the blend to somewhere around 60 to 75 so the original detail and colour partly show through.

Flat areas look blotchy after saving

JPEG struggles with large smooth colour fields. Export as PNG or raise the quality above 90.

What is a duotone image?

A duotone maps the brightness of a photograph onto a gradient between two colours. The darkest pixels take the first colour, the brightest take the second, and everything in between is a blend. It was originally a printing technique for adding depth to a black and white image with a second ink, and it survives today because the result is graphic, bold and instantly readable at small sizes.

How do I make a duotone image online?

Drop your photo onto the tool, pick a shadow colour and a highlight colour, and the preview updates immediately. Adjust the contrast slider to control how much of the image sits at each end, and use blend if you want the original colours partly visible. Press Apply and save. Nothing is uploaded.

What is the difference between duotone and tritone?

A duotone runs a straight gradient from shadow to highlight. A tritone inserts a third colour in the middle, so the ramp bends through it. That extra control is what lets you build palettes that a two-colour gradient simply cannot reach — a sunset that goes deep red, then pink, then yellow, for example, rather than a flat interpolation between red and yellow that passes through muddy orange.

What does the midpoint slider do?

In tritone mode it decides where the middle colour sits on the brightness ramp. Push it low and the mid colour takes over the shadows, leaving a long stretch to the highlight. Push it high and most of the image sits between shadow and mid, with the highlight confined to the brightest areas. It is the control that decides which of your three colours dominates.

Why does contrast matter so much for duotone?

Because the mapping depends entirely on luminance. A flat, low-contrast photo has most of its pixels bunched in the middle of the range, so a duotone of it uses only the middle of your gradient and both of your chosen colours barely appear. Raising contrast before mapping spreads the pixels across the full range so your shadow and highlight colours actually show up. This is why a duotone of a hazy photo looks disappointing until you push contrast.

What is the blend slider for?

It mixes between the original image and the full duotone. At 100 percent the result is a pure two or three colour mapping. Lower it and the original colours bleed back through, which gives a graded, tinted look rather than a graphic one. Around 60 to 75 percent is a useful middle ground for photography that should still read as a photograph.

How does the tool decide the brightness of each pixel?

It uses the Rec. 709 luminance formula, which weights green at about 0.72, red at 0.21 and blue at 0.07 because that matches how sensitive human vision is to each. A simple average of the three channels would make blues far too bright and reds too dark, and the resulting duotone would misplace things relative to how you perceive the original.

Are my images uploaded to a server?

No. The mapping is built as a 256-entry lookup table and applied pixel by pixel in your own browser. Nothing leaves your device, and the tool keeps working if your connection drops once the page has loaded.

Why is it so fast even on large photos?

Because the expensive part is done only once. Instead of computing the colour mapping for every pixel, the tool precomputes the result for all 256 possible brightness values and then each pixel is a simple table lookup. That is a fixed 256 calculations regardless of whether your image is one megapixel or fifty.

Can I use my own brand colours?

Yes. Every colour is a standard picker, so you can paste exact hex values from a brand guide. That is the main reason this exists rather than a fixed set of filters — a duotone in your actual brand palette is genuinely useful for headers, social cards and event artwork.

Can I process several images at once?

Which file formats are supported?

Is transparency preserved?

Yes for PNG and WebP output. The alpha channel passes through untouched, so only visible pixels are mapped. JPG has no alpha, so transparent areas are filled with the background colour you choose first.

Can I get the original image back afterwards?

No. Duotone is a lossy transformation in the information sense: three colour channels are collapsed into a single brightness value before being remapped, so the original hue data is gone. Keep your source file. Setting blend to zero returns the original in the preview, but once you have saved a duotone the colour information is not recoverable from it.

Which photos work best as duotones?

Images with clear separation between subject and background, strong shapes, and a decent tonal range. Portraits against a plain wall, architecture, and anything with a defined silhouette work well. Busy scenes with lots of similar mid-tones tend to collapse into an indistinct mass, because once colour is removed there is nothing left to separate the elements.

Should I convert to black and white first?

No need. The tool reads luminance directly, so a greyscale conversion beforehand changes nothing and just adds a step. If you want to control how specific colours translate to brightness before mapping, that is a different job — adjust the image first, then duotone it.

Does this remove EXIF data?

Yes. Re-encoding from the canvas drops camera model, GPS coordinates, timestamps and other metadata. If you want to strip metadata without changing the picture, use the remove EXIF tool instead.

Does the tool add a watermark or need an account?
