The boost goes where it is needed
Each pixel's existing saturation decides how much it receives. At plus 60, a dull test colour gained 50 percent more colourfulness and a vivid one gained 5 percent. Plain saturation asked 60 percent of both, and the vivid one could only be given 15 percent before running out of range.
Skin tone protection
The boost is held back in the orange band where skin sits, easing off smoothly at the edges. On a mid skin swatch at plus 60, the applied boost was 29 percent of the unprotected amount; an equally saturated blue was untouched at 100 percent.
Nothing ever clips
The boost is capped per pixel at the largest value that keeps every channel in range, so strong colours keep their detail instead of flattening into a solid patch.

Vibrance against saturation
Both sliders make colours stronger. The difference is who they act on: saturation treats every pixel identically, while vibrance gives most of its effect to the pixels that had the least colour to begin with.

When to use vibrance and when to use saturation
These two sliders are often described as if one is a gentler version of the other, which misses the point entirely. Saturation multiplies the colourfulness of every pixel by the same amount. That is exactly right when a whole image is uniformly flat, such as a scan or a washed out screenshot, because everything needs the same help. It is wrong on a typical photograph, because a typical photograph already contains a few things that are strongly coloured, and those are the pixels with the least room left to move. Push saturation on a photo containing a red jacket and a grey sky, and the sky improves slightly while the jacket runs out of range and turns into a flat red shape with no detail in it. Vibrance solves this by asking each pixel how much colour it already has and giving most of the boost to the ones that have least. The grey sky gets nearly the full effect and the red jacket gets almost none, which is why vibrance can be pushed much further before anything looks artificial. The practical approach is to reach for vibrance by default, push it further than feels comfortable, then back off slightly, and only add a little saturation afterwards if the whole image still feels flat. The one thing worth knowing is that skin sits in the orange part of the colour wheel and is usually only moderately saturated, which means an unprotected boost hits it hard and people go sunburnt. That is what the skin protection option is for, and on any photo with a person in it, it should stay on.

What the weighting actually does
Most of the boost goes where there is least colour
Every pixel is measured for how saturated it already is, on a scale from zero for grey to one for a fully vivid colour, and the vibrance amount is multiplied by one minus that figure. A completely dull pixel receives the full boost; a fully saturated one receives nothing at all; everything else lands in between. The difference from a flat saturation boost is large and easy to measure. We took a dull colour at 130,120,110 and a vivid one at 230,20,20 and applied plus 60 to each slider in turn. Vibrance boosted the dull pixel's colourfulness by 50 percent and the vivid one by 5 percent, which is the weighting doing exactly what it is supposed to. Saturation asked for 60 percent from both, and the vivid pixel could only be given 15 percent before a channel would have left the range. That gap is the whole argument: with vibrance the restraint is deliberate and shaped by the picture, while with saturation it is imposed at the last moment by the edge of the number range.
Why skin needs protecting
Skin is a problem for any colour boost because of where it sits. Its hue falls in a narrow orange band around thirty degrees on the colour wheel, and it is usually only moderately saturated, which means a vibrance boost, which by design favours the less saturated, hits skin harder than almost anything else in the frame. Left alone, a landscape correction that looks perfect on the grass will have turned the people in it sunburnt. The protection here reduces the boost inside that orange band, most strongly at the centre of it and easing off smoothly toward the edges so there is no hard line between protected and unprotected colours. Measured on a mid skin swatch at plus 60 vibrance, the boost applied was 29 percent of the unprotected amount, while an equally saturated blue on the opposite side of the wheel was untouched at 100 percent.

Faces went sunburnt
Skin protection is switched off, or vibrance is very high. Turn protection on and lower the amount.
A strong colour lost its detail
That is clipping, and the per-pixel cap limits it but cannot remove it once a channel is at the top of the range. Lower the saturation slider, which is the one that hits vivid colours hardest.
Nothing much happened
Your photo may already be quite saturated, in which case vibrance has little to work with by design. Try a small saturation lift instead.
The colour cast got worse
Boosting colour boosts the cast too. Correct white balance first, then lift.

Does it work on greyscale images?
No. A pixel with no colour has nothing to boost, so a greyscale photo comes back unchanged whatever you set.

Which format should I export?
Keep the original for photographs. Boosting colour exaggerates the colour artefacts JPEG introduces, so re-export at quality 90 or above if the source was a JPEG.
