How the Orton effect works and how to keep it from going muddy
Michael Orton invented this in the 1980s with slide film and no computer. He exposed two frames of the same scene, one sharp and correctly exposed and one deliberately overexposed by a stop or two and thrown out of focus, then sandwiched the two slides together and projected them. The result glows: the soft overexposed layer spreads light out of the highlights and into everything near them, while the sharp layer underneath keeps the edges and texture intact. That combination is the whole technique, and it explains the most common way people get it wrong, which is to blur the photograph and then brighten it. That gives you a blurred photograph. What you want is both layers present at once, the glow coming from one and the definition from the other. Three things follow for how to use it. First, the overexposure matters as much as the blur: a soft layer that has not been brightened produces a grey, flat glow rather than a luminous one, which is why Orton shot that frame hot. Second, glow around forty to sixty percent is where the result still reads as a photograph; past seventy it becomes an obvious treatment, which is a legitimate choice but should be one. Third, and least obvious, a strong glow will fill in fine detail and leave the picture soft in the wrong way. Holding the glow back specifically where there is real detail solves it, and that is what the detail protection control does.
