How to emboss an image

What emboss really is, and why most versions clip

Emboss makes a flat picture look like it was pressed into metal or paper, and the trick behind it is simpler than the result suggests. Your visual system judges depth largely from where highlights and shadows fall. If a shape has a bright edge on the upper left and a dark edge on the lower right, you read it as raised, and if you swap them you read the same shape as pressed in. The filter manufactures exactly that pattern from brightness changes already in the photograph.

Practically, it computes a directional difference for every pixel. Neighbours on one side get positive weights, neighbours on the opposite side get negative weights, and the middle gets nothing. When the neighbourhood is uniform the two sides cancel and the pixel becomes neutral. Adding mid grey afterwards turns that neutral zero into visible grey, and pushes rises above it and falls below it.

Two details separate a good emboss from a bad one. The weights must sum to zero, otherwise flat regions are not neutral and the result drifts. And the response has to be scaled before the bias is added, otherwise a strong edge overflows and clips to solid white, which is the blown out look you see on many free emboss filters. Here the response is divided by the total absolute weight, so the full range fits comfortably and the depth slider then scales from a safe baseline.

Because the six kernels are exact mirrors of each other, opposite light directions produce exactly opposite relief. On a test ridge, the left kernel returned 208 and the right returned 48, values that add to 256, which is mid grey doubled. That symmetry is a good sign that the maths is right, and it is why switching direction genuinely flips the raised and sunken sides rather than just shifting things slightly.

Emboss is a gradient effect, so it is a close relative of Edge Detect. For a flat carved plate, run Grayscale Image first, and if you want a stamped paper texture on a logo, try adding Add Border afterwards.

It is a directional gradient

The filter subtracts one side of every pixel's neighbourhood from the other side using a small 3 by 3 kernel, then adds mid grey. Where the picture is flat both sides cancel and you get exactly mid grey. Where brightness rises in the direction of the light you get a bright rim, and where it falls you get a dark one. That pair of rims is what your eye reads as depth.

Why the kernel must sum to zero

If the nine weights do not add up to zero then flat areas do not cancel, and the whole image drifts brighter or darker before the bias is even added. All six kernels here sum to exactly zero, which is why an evenly coloured wall comes out as clean mid grey rather than washed out.

The clipping bug, and the fix

Even with a zero sum kernel, a full black to white edge produces a response of over 700. Adding the mid grey bias on top of that clips straight to solid white and destroys the detail. Dividing the response by the sum of the absolute weights, which is 8 for every kernel here, brings it into range first. A test step edge that used to clip now peaks at 218, safely below white.

A note on what shows up

A clean step edge, where dark meets light once, correctly produces a single line. To see the classic raised and sunken pair you need a ridge, meaning a thin light line on a dark ground or the other way round. Text, engraved patterns, coins, leaves and fabric weave all have ridges, which is why they emboss so well.

Make a logo look stamped into metal

Export the logo as a PNG on a flat background, choose Top left light and raise the relief depth. Hard vector edges emboss far more convincingly than photographic ones, so a logo is close to the ideal subject.

Create a carved stone or coin effect

Grey stone finish with a medium depth gives the classic engraved appearance. Subjects with clear ridges such as lettering, medals and ornament respond best, because there is real relief for the filter to find.

Make an embossed paper look for a card or invitation

Keep the depth low. Pressed paper is subtle, and pushing the slider hard turns it into hammered metal instead. A light touch on a simple monogram is usually all it takes.

Bring out fine texture in fabric, bark or brick

Close up texture photos are the best photographic subjects for emboss, since they are full of small ridges. Try each light direction, because the same photo can look raised or sunken depending on which side the light appears to come from.

Produce a grey height style texture for design work

The output is a directional gradient centred on mid grey, which is useful as a rough texture or overlay layer in design tools. Be aware it is not a true normal map or height map, so it will not drive lighting correctly in 3D software.

Build a background pattern from a plain photo

Because flat areas come out as clean mid grey, an embossed photo makes a quiet textured background that text sits on easily, especially at low relief depth.

Questions people ask

What does the emboss filter do to a photo?

It replaces the picture with a map of how brightness changes in one direction, centred on mid grey. Rises become bright, falls become dark, and flat areas become neutral grey, which together look like a carved surface.

Why is most of my image grey?

That is correct behaviour. Only places where brightness changes produce relief, so smooth skies, walls and studio backgrounds go neutral. If almost everything is grey, your image is very soft; raise the relief depth.

What does the light direction change?

It swaps which side of each edge is raised and which is sunken. Top left is the traditional choice because most people read light as coming from above and to the left, which makes shapes look raised rather than stamped in.

Why does the result never turn solid white?

The kernel response is divided by the total absolute weight before the mid grey bias is added, which keeps even a full black to white edge inside range. Without that step, strong edges clip and you lose all the detail in them.

Can I keep the original colours?

Yes, with the Keep colour option. It embosses each colour channel separately, which produces an odd iridescent look that some designs suit. Grey stone is the classic carved appearance.

Is emboss the same as a bevel in a design tool?

No. A bevel adds a three dimensional edge to a shape or a layer that you specify. Emboss works on the pixels of a whole image and has no idea what the shapes are.

What images emboss best?

Anything with ridges and clear detail: text, engravings, coins, leaves, bark, fabric weave, brick and line art. Soft portraits and hazy landscapes give very little to work with.

Are my files uploaded anywhere?

No. The image is decoded and filtered in this page, and the result is created on your own device. Nothing is sent to a server.

Can I emboss several images at once?

Yes. Add them all, choose the direction and depth once, and press the button. Each is processed in turn and a Save all button appears when more than one is ready.

Which format is the output?

The same as your input. PNG is a good choice because emboss produces flat areas and hard rims, both of which PNG stores exactly.

Does the effect reduce quality?

It changes the picture completely by design, but it does not resize or resample it. The saved file has the same dimensions as your original.
