It does not try to be a full photo editor. There are no filters, no stickers and no layers panel. Instead, each part that matters for a meme has its own control: the layout, the text boxes, the font, the colour, the outline, the size and the width of each line. The preview is drawn the same way as the download, so what you see is what you save.

Because it works on your own pictures, it suits private jokes as well as public ones: a photo of your friend at a party, your cat looking guilty, a screenshot from a game you played last night or a chart from work that deserves a caption.

There is no paid version and nothing is locked. Every template, font, colour, speech bubble and file type on this page is open to everyone. You do not need to give an email address, make an account or watch an advert before the download starts.

This makes it a simple meme generator free of the usual catches. Make one meme or fifty in a row; each download is a fresh file with your text and your picture and nothing else. Because the work happens on your own device, there is no queue and no daily allowance to run out of.

If you want to keep a copy of your settings for later, the simplest way is to save the meme as a PNG and keep the original picture too. There is no account to store projects, so when you close the tab the text boxes are gone.

You do not need to install an app, a plug-in or a font. The page loads in a normal web browser on a computer, tablet or phone, and the meme font comes with the page. Open it, add a picture and you are making a meme within seconds.

Being a meme generator online does not mean your picture goes online. The page runs its code inside your browser: the picture is opened, drawn and saved on your own device. Nothing is sent to us, which is also why big pictures and long GIFs do not have to wait for an upload.

It works in current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari. If the page ever feels slow on an older phone, close a few other tabs, because the browser needs some memory to hold the picture and, for GIFs, every frame of the animation.

The whole tool is built around your picture, not a fixed set of images. Use a photo straight from your camera roll, a screenshot, a picture saved from a chat or a drawing you scanned. This meme generator with own image support takes JPG, PNG, WebP and HEIC files, and animated GIFs too.

There are three ways to add the picture. Tap Select your picture and choose a file, drag the file onto the dashed box, or copy a picture somewhere else and press Ctrl+V (Cmd+V on a Mac) anywhere on the page. Paste is handy for screenshots: take the screenshot, come to the page and paste.

To use a different picture later, press Change picture under the template buttons. Your text boxes stay as they are, so you can try the same joke on two or three photos and keep the one that works best. If the picture is very large, it is fitted to a sensible width first; small pictures are scaled up so the text still has room.

Top & bottom text is the style most people picture when they hear the word meme: a set-up line along the top, the punchline along the bottom, both in white capital letters with a thick black outline. It is the default template, so when you add a picture the two boxes, Top text and Bottom text, are already waiting.

Type the first line into Top text and the second into Bottom text. That is the full meme generator top text bottom text routine: no need to place anything, because the top box sits near the top edge and the bottom box near the bottom edge. Long lines wrap onto two or three lines and the letters shrink a little so the text stays inside the picture.

The style works because the outline keeps white letters readable on any background, from a blue sky to a dark room. If a line covers a face or the key part of the picture, drag it a little up or down, or make it narrower with the Width slider so it wraps into a taller, slimmer block.

Caption above is the newer style you see on many social feeds: a white bar sits above the picture and the text is written in plain black letters, like a short post with a picture under it. The picture itself stays clean, which suits photos where every part matters.

Pick Caption above in the Template card and a caption box appears. Type your line there; the white bar grows taller as your caption gets longer, so two or three lines fit without crowding. The caption uses Arial bold in black, in normal upper and lower case, not the outlined meme font.

You can still use the text boxes on top of a caption meme. Leave them empty and they are not drawn at all, or fill one in to add a label on the picture itself, for example the name of the person in the photo.

The caption style is a good fit when the joke is a full sentence, such as a story that starts with a situation and ends with the picture as the reaction. Plain black letters on white are easy to read on small screens, and the picture underneath keeps all its detail because nothing is written over it.

Every text box has its own settings. Tap a box in the Text boxes card, or tap its words on the preview, and the settings open under it. The selected box shows a dashed blue frame on the preview so you can see which one you are editing; the frame is not saved in the download.

This is a meme generator with text controls that cover what a meme needs and no more. Font has three choices: Meme (Impact style), Arial bold and Comic. Two colour squares set the text colour and the outline colour. The Outline tick box turns the outline on or off, and the CAPS tick box writes the text in capital letters, which is the classic meme look.

The Size slider sets how big the letters start, and the Width slider sets how wide the text block may be, from a narrow column to the full width of the picture. Text is always centred within its block. To start a new line where you want it, press Enter inside the text box.

To remove a text box, press the small cross next to it. To add one, press the Text button under the list; the new box appears in the middle of the picture, ready to type into and drag.

Meme (Impact style) is the bold, tall, narrow typeface that most memes use. The page loads the Anton font for it, so it looks the same on every device, even where Impact is not installed. It is the best choice for white text with a black outline.

Arial bold is a plain, clean font. It suits longer sentences, labels and memes where the joke should look like a sign, a message or a news line. Comic is a rounded, informal font that fits speech bubbles and cartoon-style jokes. It uses Comic Sans MS where your device has it, so it may look a little different on some phones.

Colour and outline work together. White text with a black outline reads on nearly any picture. Black text without an outline works on a light, plain area such as a white wall or sky. Yellow or red text with a black outline stands out on busy photos. Turn the outline off when you place text on a solid area and want a cleaner look.

You never have to guess the right font size. Each text box wraps its words onto new lines when they reach the width you set, and if the text is still too big, the letters shrink step by step until every line fits the width and the whole block stays within a sensible part of the picture height.

That is why a long sentence may come out smaller than a short one with the same Size setting. If the letters get too small to read, you have three choices: shorten the text, widen the block with the Width slider, or split the text into two boxes, one at the top and one at the bottom.

Line breaks you type yourself are kept. Press Enter where you want a new line, and the tool wraps inside each of your lines only if a line is too long for the width.

The fit is worked out again every time you type, change the template or move a slider, so the preview always shows the final size. The same rules are used for the download, which means the text in your saved file wraps and shrinks exactly as it does on screen.

Every text box can be moved. Press on the words in the preview and drag them where you want them; on a phone, use your finger. The box keeps its place as a share of the picture, so if you change the template or the picture, the text stays in the same part of the meme.

There is no limit on the number of text boxes. Add a label to each person in a group photo, number the steps of a bad plan, or put small notes in the corners. Each box keeps its own font, colour, outline, size and width.

If two boxes overlap and you keep grabbing the wrong one, tap the box you want in the Text boxes list first. Then drag it on the preview, or nudge its width so it no longer covers the other one.

A speech bubble turns a photo into a little comic: a white oval with a black outline and a pointed tail towards the person or pet who is speaking. Press the Speech bubble button under the text list and a bubble appears with sample text, ready to edit and drag next to a mouth.

This meme generator with speech bubble support lets you pick the tail in the Bubble tail control: Left, Right, or None (thought) for a plain oval without a tail. Place the bubble so the tail points at the speaker. The text inside is black on white, and the bubble grows around the words as you type.

You can also turn any existing text box into a bubble with its Speech bubble tick box. Doing so switches the font to Comic and turns CAPS off, because bubbles read more like real speech in normal letters. You can switch the font back to Meme or Arial bold afterwards. Use the Size and Width sliders to make a bubble smaller or wider.

Some jokes need two pictures: before and after, expectation and reality, what I ordered and what I got. Choose Two pictures side by side or Two pictures stacked in the Template card. If you have only one picture so far, the file picker opens so you can add the second one.

Side by side scales both pictures to the same height and places them next to each other, so the meme is wide. Stacked scales both to the same width and puts the second picture under the first, so the meme is tall, which fits phone screens well. This meme generator with two pictures keeps each picture in its own shape; nothing is cropped.

Then add text as usual. The top and bottom boxes span the whole meme, so for a side-by-side meme you may want to narrow each box with the Width slider and drag one over each picture. Press Change second picture to swap the second picture at any time. Tip: if one picture is already open and you paste another one, it becomes the second picture and the layout switches to side by side.

The four templates here are layouts, not pictures: Top & bottom text, Caption above, Two pictures side by side and Two pictures stacked. They set where the picture goes and where the text goes, and they work with any picture you add.

Many people look for meme generator templates expecting a gallery of famous meme pictures. This tool does not ship such a library. Those pictures are photos, film stills and drawings that belong to their owners, so you bring the picture yourself: a photo you took, a screenshot you are allowed to use, or an image you have the rights to.

The upside is that your memes look like yours. A layout plus your own photo often lands better with friends than the same old faces, and you are free of any watermark or credit line a picture library might add.

Add an animated GIF and the tool reads every frame. The preview shows the first frame with your text, and a note under the preview tells you how many frames the GIF has. The file type switches to Animated GIF on its own, and when you press Download meme your text is drawn onto every frame.

The frame timing of the original GIF is kept, so the animation plays at the same speed, and the loop setting is kept too. A progress bar shows how far the saving has got, which matters for long GIFs with hundreds of frames. The finished file is called meme.gif.

A few things are good to know about the meme generator GIF option. Text stays in the same place on every frame; it does not move with the animation. GIFs can show 256 colours per frame, so photos with soft colour changes may look a little banded. Transparent areas of a GIF become white. If you choose JPG or PNG instead, or press Copy image, you get a still picture of the first frame.

Long or large GIFs can make big files. If the result is too heavy for a chat app, shrink it with Compress GIF. If you want to start from a video clip, turn the clip into a GIF with Video to GIF first, then add it here for the text.

The file you download contains your picture and your text and nothing else: no logo, no site name in the corner and no strip along the bottom. This is a meme generator without watermark marks of any kind, on every file type, including animated GIFs.

That matters more than it seems. A watermark from a meme site makes a joke look second-hand and takes space from the picture. Here the meme is yours, so you can share it, print it or put your own name on it.

The Save card offers JPG and PNG, plus Animated GIF when your first picture is an animated GIF. JPG makes the smallest file for photos and is the default; it is saved at a high quality setting, so text edges stay crisp. PNG keeps every pixel exactly and is a good choice for screenshots, drawings and memes with lots of flat colour.

The file is named meme.jpg, meme.png or meme.gif. The finished meme is as wide as your picture, fitted between 400 and 1600 pixels; the height follows the picture shape and the template. That size is sharp on phones and laptops and still light enough for chats.

Copy image puts the meme on your clipboard as a PNG, so you can paste it straight into a chat, an email or a document without saving a file first. Some browsers ask for permission or do not allow images on the clipboard; if you see a message saying copying was blocked, use Download meme instead.

The tool opens JPG, PNG, WebP and HEIC pictures and animated GIFs. HEIC is the format iPhones use for photos by default; it is decoded right in the browser, so there is no need to convert it first. Pictures are turned upright using the rotation the camera stored, so a phone photo should not come out sideways.

Transparent PNG and WebP pictures are placed on a white background. If you want to cut a person or object out of a photo before adding text, use Remove Background first and add the result here. To cut a picture down to the part you need, use Crop Image, then bring the cropped picture back.

A meme is only fun once someone sees it. For chat apps, Copy image is the fastest route: copy, switch to the chat and paste. On a phone, download the meme and share it from your gallery or files app.

For social posts, JPG is the safest choice because every site accepts it. Tall stacked memes look good on phone feeds; wide side-by-side memes work best where pictures are shown in landscape. Animated GIFs are accepted by most chat apps and many social sites, though some convert them into short videos on their side.

If a site needs an exact size, change it with Resize Image after you download. If you want to send several memes in one picture, Photo Collage can put them together, and Merge Images can join two memes in a strip.

The page is made to work on phones. Tap Select your picture to pick a photo from your gallery or take a new one. The preview and the settings sit one above the other, and you drag text with your finger; the preview does not scroll while you drag, so the text follows your finger.

Typing on a phone is easiest in the text boxes in the Text boxes card. If a slider is hard to hit, tap the box first so its settings open, then move the slider slowly. When you are done, Download meme saves the file to your downloads, where you can share it from your gallery or files app.

Your picture stays on your device. The page opens the file in your browser, draws the meme with your browser and saves it from your browser. No copy of the picture or your text is sent to our server, so private photos stay private.

Nothing is stored after you leave. When you close or reload the tab, the picture and the text boxes are gone. If you want extra privacy for a photo you plan to share widely, remove its hidden camera details with Remove Metadata before you make the meme; the downloaded meme itself is a fresh image drawn on a canvas.

You are responsible for the pictures you use. Your own photos are safe ground. Screenshots of films, shows and games, photos of famous people and drawings by others belong to their owners, and whether you may use them depends on the law where you live and how you share the meme.

Be kind with photos of real people, especially people who are not public figures. A meme that is funny in a group chat can hurt when it spreads further. When in doubt, ask the person first or use a picture of yourself, your pet or something you made.

This tool makes picture memes and GIF memes. It does not make video memes: it cannot open MP4 or other video files, and it cannot add text to a video. To use a clip, turn it into a GIF first with Video to GIF.

It also does not include a library of famous meme pictures, rotate text, crop or filter the picture, add stickers, save projects to an account or undo changes with a button. To add text with more styling options, such as shadows or boxes, Add Text to Image has more controls. If the final file is too big for a site, Compress Image can make a JPG or PNG smaller.

Keep it short. The best memes have a set-up of a few words at the top and a punchline of a few words at the bottom. If you need a long sentence, the Caption above template reads more easily than outlined text on the picture.

Mind the faces. Drag text off eyes and mouths; people react to the face first and the words second. In a speech bubble, point the tail at the speaker's mouth so nobody has to guess who is talking.

Pick a picture with some calm space at the top or bottom, such as a wall, a sky or a floor. Outlined text is readable anywhere, but it looks best where it does not fight with small details. For GIFs, check a few frames in your head: text near the edges is less likely to cover the action in the middle.
