    Every setting explained

    Paragraphs

Full paragraphs separated by an empty line, up to 200 at a time. Paragraph length decides how many sentences each one has.

    Sentences

One block made of the number of sentences you ask for, up to 200. Each sentence has roughly 6 to 14 words, so the lines vary the way real writing does.

    Words

An exact number of words, from 1 to 10,000, in one block that starts with a capital letter and ends with a full stop.

    Characters

An exact number of characters, up to 100,000. Tick count without spaces to count only the visible characters. The text always ends with a full stop.

    Bullet list

Short items of about 3 to 8 words each, with no full stop at the end. Tick numbered for 1, 2, 3 instead of bullets. Up to 200 items.

    Headings + text

Sections made of a short heading of 2 to 5 words and one paragraph under it. Up to 200 sections, and Paragraph length applies to the text under each heading.

    Lorem ipsum (Latin)

The classic dummy text. Tick Start with “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet” so the first sentence opens with the familiar line, or untick it for random Latin from the first word.

    English

Readable sample copy about a small company, its products and its customers, with the words shuffled. Useful when people reviewing a layout should see English words.

    Paragraph length

Short gives 2 to 3 sentences, Medium 4 to 6 and Long 7 to 10. It shows for Paragraphs and Headings + text, where paragraph size matters.

    Format

Plain text, HTML tags or Markdown. Plain text shows a formatted preview; HTML and Markdown show the code, so you can see every tag and symbol before you copy.

Add bold, italic and a link

Shown when the format is HTML tags or Markdown. Puts a bold word and an italic word, plus a link in HTML, into longer paragraphs so you can test inline styles.

    Live counts

The line next to the buttons shows words, characters and characters without spaces for the plain text version, so HTML tags and Markdown symbols are not counted.

Lorem ipsum generator with word count: an exact number of words

Many briefs ask for a set length: a 150-word product blurb, a 300-word blog intro, a 1,000-word article. Choose Words, type the number, and you get exactly that many words in one block. The live counter next to the buttons confirms the total, so you can check it at a glance before you copy.

The count is exact because the text is built word by word until it reaches your number, then closed with a full stop. With Lorem ipsum (Latin) and the start option ticked, the first words follow the classic opening line, Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet consectetur adipiscing elit, and the rest are drawn at random from a longer Latin word list. Ask for 5 words and you get the first 5 words of that line.

A lorem ipsum generator with word count is handy when you test a layout against a word limit. A content system might cut a summary at 55 words, a card design might hold 30, and a newsletter block might have room for 120. Fill each box with exactly that many words and you see right away whether the design breaks or the text gets cut off.

The Words option makes one long block with no paragraph breaks. If you want a fixed length spread across several paragraphs, use Paragraphs with Short, Medium or Long and watch the live counter, or generate the words here and add line breaks yourself. To check a finished draft of real text against the same limit, paste it into the Word Counter.

Lorem ipsum generator by character count, with or without spaces

Some fields are limited by characters, not words: a meta description, a short social post, an SMS, a form field with a maximum length, a database column. Choose Characters, type the limit, and the text is cut to exactly that many characters, spaces included. The last character is always a full stop, so the block looks finished rather than chopped in the middle of a word.

Tick count without spaces when a limit counts only visible characters. The tool keeps adding text until the number of non-space characters matches yours, so the total with spaces will be higher. The live line next to the buttons shows both numbers, which makes it easy to confirm the result against the rule you are testing.

A lorem ipsum generator by character count is the quickest way to stress-test a text field. Paste exactly 160 characters into a meta description box, 255 into a database field or 2,000 into a comment form, and you see whether the limit, the counter and the error message behave as they should. Try one character over the limit too, so you know what users see when they type too much.

You can go up to 100,000 characters in one go. That is enough to fill a long text area, test how an editor copes with a very long post, or check how a page handles a huge block of text without paragraph breaks. On an older phone a very large amount can take a moment to appear in the preview.

Lorem ipsum generator with HTML tags: p, h2, lists, bold and links

Choose HTML tags and the result is ready to paste into a web page, a template or a code editor. Paragraphs come wrapped in p tags, headings from Headings + text use h2, and lists use ul with li items, or ol when numbered is ticked. Characters such as < and & are escaped, so the code is safe to drop straight into a file.

Tick Add bold, italic and a link to put a strong word, an em word and a link inside each paragraph that is longer than about a dozen words. The link points to #, so it goes nowhere, but it lets you check link colour, underline and hover styles, and how bold and italic look in your chosen font.

A lorem ipsum generator with HTML tags saves you typing markup around dummy text by hand. That matters most when you are styling a blog template or a rich text area: you need real paragraphs, headings and lists to see margins, line height and list markers, and you need them in the right tags so your CSS applies to them.

The output is a fragment, not a full page: there is no html, head or body element. That is on purpose, because most of the time you paste it inside an existing layout. If you download it as .html and open the file on its own, the browser shows it with its default styles, which is still a quick way to preview the structure.

Markdown output for docs, wikis and README files

Markdown is the plain format behind many README files, wikis, note apps, static site builders and chat tools. Choose Markdown and headings start with ##, bullet items with a dash and numbered items with 1., 2., 3. Paragraphs are separated by an empty line, as Markdown expects.

With Add bold, italic and a link ticked, each paragraph gets one word in **bold** and one in *italic*. No link is added in Markdown, because a link with no real address is rarely useful there. Download saves a .md file you can drop into a project folder or open in any Markdown editor.

Use Markdown output to check how a documentation theme styles headings, to fill a sample note, or to test the Markdown preview in an app you are building. If your site turns Markdown into HTML for you, this is often quicker than writing the HTML tags yourself, and the file stays easy to read in a code review.

Plain text output, and Copy, Copy for Word / Docs or Download

Plain text is the default and the most flexible format. Paragraphs are separated by an empty line, headings sit on their own line, and list items are one per line with a bullet character or a number in front. There are no tags or symbols to clean up, so you can paste it almost anywhere: a design file, a code string, a spreadsheet cell, a chat message or a plain text field.

The preview box shows plain text the way it will look once styled: paragraphs as paragraphs, headings in bold and lists as real lists. What you copy is the plain version underneath, so a heading becomes an ordinary line when you paste it into a simple text box. If you want headings and lists to keep their formatting in a document, use Copy for Word / Docs instead.

Plain text is also the format the live counts use. Whatever format you pick, the word and character numbers next to the buttons describe the plain text version, which is what a reader would actually see on the finished page.

Lorem ipsum generator with headings: sections for long pages

Long pages are rarely one wall of text. Choose Headings + text and every section is a short heading of two to five words followed by one paragraph. Ask for 4 sections and you get four headings, each with its own paragraph, which looks far more like a real article, help page or landing page than plain paragraphs do.

A lorem ipsum generator with headings is useful for testing heading styles, a table of contents, anchor links and the spacing between sections. Set Paragraph length to Short for a scannable page or Long for an in-depth guide, and switch the format to HTML tags to get h2 and p tags you can paste into a template.

In Plain text, headings sit on their own line and the preview shows them in bold. In HTML they are h2 elements, and in Markdown they start with ##. If you copy with Copy for Word / Docs, the headings usually arrive as real headings, so they can show up in the outline or navigation pane of your document.

Need a different heading level? The output uses h2 because that is the usual level for sections under a page's single main title. Change h2 to h3 with find and replace in your editor if your template needs smaller headings, or mix both levels by hand to test a deeper outline.

Lorem ipsum generator with bullet points and numbered lists

Choose Bullet list for short items of about three to eight words, with no full stop at the end, which is how most lists in menus, feature grids and slides look. Tick numbered to switch from bullets to 1, 2, 3. You can make up to 200 items at once.

A lorem ipsum generator with bullet points helps when you design a pricing table, a feature list, a checklist or a slide. The items have different lengths, so you can see how the layout copes when one line wraps and the next does not, and whether the bullets or numbers stay lined up.

In Plain text each item starts with a bullet character (•) or a number and sits on its own line. In HTML tags you get a ul or ol with li items, and in Markdown each item starts with a dash or a number. Copy for Word / Docs pastes a real list, so your document's own list style and indent apply.

Lists are made on their own, without paragraphs around them. If you need a paragraph followed by a list, generate one paragraph and copy it, then switch to Bullet list and copy the items to paste below it. Your settings for each step are kept, so switching back and forth is quick.

Lorem ipsum generator in English: readable placeholder copy

Latin dummy text has one big strength: nobody reads it, so people look at the design instead of the words. Sometimes that is the wrong trade. Clients who are not designers may find Latin confusing, a screen reader test needs real words, and a spelling or hyphenation check is pointless in a language your tools do not know.

Choose English and the text is built from plain English words about a small company, its products and the people who use them. It reads like rough marketing copy, but the words are shuffled, so the sentences do not make full sense. That keeps the focus on the layout while still looking like English to anyone who glances at it.

A lorem ipsum generator in English is a good fit for user tests, client presentations, training slides and anything where people might try to read the text. It also shows English word lengths and letter shapes, which differ from Latin, so line breaks and text width look closer to the final copy.

All the other settings work with English too: paragraphs, sentences, exact words or characters, lists, headings and every format. The Start with “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet” option only shows for Latin, since that opening would make no sense in English text.

Lorem ipsum generator for web designers: filling layouts and mockups

Designers usually need text before the writers are done. Placeholder text lets you set type, spacing and grids with something that has the rhythm of real writing, so the structure can move forward while the copy is still being drafted.

A lorem ipsum generator for web designers should cover more than paragraphs, and this one does: exact words for cards, exact characters for fields, headings for long pages, lists for feature grids and HTML tags for prototypes. Use them together. For a blog template, make 4 sections with Headings + text in HTML tags, tick Add bold, italic and a link, and you can style a whole article from one paste.

Test the edges, not only the average. Fill a card with one word and with 80 words. Fill a product title with 20 characters and with 120. Fill a menu with 3 list items and with 12. Real content will vary, and placeholder text is the cheapest way to see what happens before it arrives.

Watch the details that dummy text reveals: single short words left alone on the last line of a paragraph, long words that break out of narrow columns, line length on wide screens and the gap between a heading and its paragraph. Latin has many long words, so it is good at finding overflow; switch to English to see a layout with more typical English word lengths.

Placeholder images matter too. If a mockup needs pictures, Photo Collage and Resize Image help you make sample images at the right size, and Color Picker helps you check the colour of text against its background so the dummy text stays easy to read.

    Typography checks with dummy text

Dummy text is at its most useful when you are choosing and tuning type. Set a few paragraphs in the font you are considering and look at the overall colour of the text block: is it too dark, too light, too tight or too loose? Because nobody is reading the words, it is easier to judge the texture of the page.

Line length is the next check. Many designers aim for somewhere around 50 to 75 characters per line in body text, and placeholder paragraphs make it easy to see whether a column is too wide on a desktop screen or too narrow on a phone. Use Characters with a small number, such as 65, to make one line of a known length and compare it against your column.

Then look at line height and paragraph spacing. Long paragraphs show whether the lines feel cramped, and Headings + text shows whether the space above a heading is clearly larger than the space below it, so each heading belongs to the text that follows. Switch between Short and Long paragraphs to see both extremes in the same layout.

Finally, test the less common pieces: bold and italic inside a paragraph, links in body text, numbered lists with ten or more items, and very long words in narrow columns. Tick Add bold, italic and a link with HTML tags, or make a numbered list of 12 items, and you will see these cases in seconds rather than writing them by hand.

Pasting into website builders and content systems

Most website builders, blog editors and content systems let you paste text straight into a text block. Copy for Word / Docs usually works best there, because paragraphs, headings and lists arrive as real blocks rather than one long line. If the editor has an HTML or code view, switch the format to HTML tags, press Copy and paste into that view instead.

For editors that accept Markdown, choose Markdown and press Copy. Headings marked with ## and lists marked with dashes are turned into proper headings and lists as soon as you paste or save. This is often the quickest way to fill a sample page with a realistic structure.

When you build a demo site with many sample posts, vary the settings for each post: one with Short paragraphs, one with Long, one with Headings + text and one with a bullet list. Press New text between posts so the previews on a blog index or archive page do not all start with the same words.

Remember to fill the small fields too. An excerpt, a summary or a card description often has its own limit, and Words or Characters gives you an exact amount for each. Leaving those empty can make a demo look broken when the real site would look fine.

Lorem ipsum generator for Word and Google Docs

Copy for Word / Docs puts the text on your clipboard as formatted rich text, with a plain text copy as a backup. Paste it into Microsoft Word, Google Docs, an email editor or most rich text boxes and paragraphs, headings, bullet lists and numbered lists arrive as real formatting rather than tags or symbols. If you ticked Add bold, italic and a link, those come across too.

It works with any format setting, so you do not need to switch to HTML tags first. If your browser does not support rich copying, the button copies the text in the format you chose instead, so you can still paste it.

Using this lorem ipsum generator for Word documents is handy when you build a report template, a letterhead, a brochure or a form. Generate Headings + text, copy it, and the headings take your document's heading styles, so you can check the outline, the table of contents and the page breaks before the real content is written.

Word also has its own shortcut, shown in the tip under the tool. Type =lorem(3,5) at the start of an empty paragraph and press Enter, and Word inserts 3 paragraphs of 5 sentences of lorem ipsum; =rand(3,5) does the same with English sample sentences. If nothing happens, check that Replace text as you type is turned on in Word's AutoCorrect options. Google Docs has no such shortcut, so copying from this page is the simple route there.

When the template is ready, Word to PDF turns it into a file you can share for review, and PDF to Word brings an existing PDF back into an editable document if you would rather start from a layout you already have.

Placeholder text for print, slides and email

Placeholder text is just as useful away from the web. For a flyer, brochure, menu or report, paste paragraphs into your layout to see how many words fit in each column, where the page breaks fall and whether the text wraps neatly around images.

For slides, Bullet list gives short items that look like real talking points, and English text is usually the better choice if the deck will be shown to people outside the design team. Keep the number of bullets close to what the final slide will have, so you set a font size that will still work later.

For email newsletters, fill each block with the amount of text it will really carry and check the result on a phone as well as a desktop screen. Narrow columns in email layouts show long words and short lines much more clearly than a wide web page does.

When a print layout is approved, export it so others can review it on any device. A PDF keeps fonts, columns and page breaks exactly where you put them, so reviewers see the same pages you do, placeholder text and all, and can mark up the design rather than the words.

How much placeholder text do you need?

Not sure how much to make? The rough guide below matches common layout pieces to a setting. It is a starting point, not a rule: your own design and audience decide the real lengths.

    Layout pieceTypical lengthSetting to try
    Button or tag1 to 3 wordsWords: 2
    Headline6 to 12 wordsWords: 8
    Card summary20 to 40 wordsWords: 30
    Meta descriptionAbout 150 to 160 charactersCharacters: 155
    Product description50 to 150 wordsWords: 100
Feature list4 to 8 short itemsBullet list: 6
Landing page section150 to 300 wordsHeadings + text: 2, Medium
Long article1,000 words or moreHeadings + text: 10, Long

As a rough idea of size, short paragraphs come out at about 12 to 40 words, medium paragraphs at about 25 to 85 and long paragraphs at about 40 to 140, because each sentence has roughly 6 to 14 words. When you need a firm number, use Words or Characters instead and the total is exact.

It also helps to ask the people writing the final copy how long each part will really be. A quick list of target lengths, such as 8 words for headlines, 30 for card summaries and 300 for each article section, turns into a set of settings you can reuse every time you build or update a template.

    Where lorem ipsum comes from

Lorem ipsum looks like Latin, and it nearly is. It comes from De finibus bonorum et malorum (On the Ends of Good and Evil), a work on ethics by the Roman writer and statesman Cicero, written in 45 BC. One passage talks about people who do not love pain for its own sake, and the words dolorem ipsum, meaning pain itself, are where the familiar opening comes from.

The dummy text is a cut-up of that passage. Words were dropped, shortened and shuffled, and the first syllable of dolorem was lost along the way, leaving lorem ipsum. The result is not proper Latin, so even a Latin reader cannot follow it, which is exactly why it works as filler.

Nobody knows for sure who first scrambled it or when. It is often said to have been used by printers and typesetters for a very long time to show a typeface without distracting readers, but the early history is hard to confirm. What is clearer is that it became widely known in the 20th century through typesetting and lettering sheets, and later through desktop publishing and word processing software, which put it on almost every designer's screen.

Latin scholars have traced the text back to Cicero, which is how we know its source. Today the classic opening, Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit, is recognised by designers around the world, and the rest of a typical passage is made of Latin words that have been mixed up in the same way.

This page keeps that spirit. The Latin option draws from a list of words found in common lorem ipsum passages and shuffles them into new sentences each time, so you get the familiar look without the same paragraph repeating again and again across your mockups.

When to use placeholder text, and when real content is better

Placeholder text is a tool for one stage of a project: when the structure is ready but the words are not. Use it to build wireframes and mockups, to style templates and themes, to test how fields and components handle short and long text, and to show a client the shape of a page before the copy is written.

Real content is better as soon as you can get it. Headlines that matter, buttons, menu labels, error messages and forms should be designed with their real words, because their length and meaning shape the design. A button that says Sign up needs a different layout from one that says Start your 30-day trial today.

Real content also beats dummy text in user testing and in reviews where people need to judge the message, not only the look. If testers cannot read the page, they cannot tell you whether it makes sense. Even rough draft copy, or the English option here, gives better feedback than Latin.

Watch out for placeholder text that goes live by mistake. Before launch, search your site, templates and documents for lorem, ipsum and dolor, and check image alt text, meta descriptions and hidden fields too. Visitors who spot dummy text on a live page are likely to see the site as unfinished.

Mixing both is often the best middle ground: real headings, buttons and navigation with placeholder body text. It shows the true structure of the page while the long-form copy is still being written, and it keeps the conversation focused on what is actually ready.

Grey bars, Latin, English or draft copy?

Lorem ipsum is not the only way to fill a layout. Early wireframes often use grey bars or boxes instead of words, which is quick and keeps everyone focused on structure. The downside is that bars do not wrap, break or vary like real text, so they hide the problems that only appear once words are in place.

Latin dummy text is the next step up. It wraps, hyphenates and varies in length like real writing, but nobody is tempted to edit it, which keeps reviews on the design. English sample copy goes one step further: it looks like the final page and works for user tests, at the cost of people sometimes reading it and commenting on the words.

Draft copy written by the team is the last step before the final text. Even a rough version shows real headline lengths, real button labels and the real amount of detail each section needs. A good rule is to move along this path as soon as you can: bars for the first sketch, lorem ipsum while the structure settles, English text for testing, then real words.

Whichever stage you are at, make the placeholder match the real content in size. A product page that will have a 20-word description should not be designed with three long paragraphs, and a blog template that will carry 1,500-word posts should not be judged with two short ones.

Before launch: a placeholder text checklist

    Search every page

Search the live site and your templates for lorem, ipsum, dolor and amet before you publish.

    Check hidden text

Look in image alt text, meta descriptions, page titles, form placeholders and error messages, which are easy to miss.

    Check files and exports

Search PDFs, slides and documents made from templates, since dummy text often hides in headers, footers and captions.

    Check sample data

Remove demo posts, products and users created with placeholder text, or keep them out of the live database.

    Placeholder text and accessibility

Placeholder text can hide problems that real users would hit. Screen readers try to pronounce Latin as if it were the page's language, so a page marked as English reads lorem ipsum out as strange English words. When you test with a screen reader, switch to English text so you hear something closer to the final result.

Check contrast and size with dummy text in place. Light grey body text on a white background can look elegant in a mockup and still be hard to read, and placeholder copy makes it easy to forget that someone will need to read every word later.

Do not leave lorem ipsum in alt text, form labels, button names or link text, even in a prototype that others will test. Those are the words assistive technology reads aloud, so give them real, short descriptions from the start.

If you do keep Latin on a test page, mark that part of the page as Latin with a lang attribute such as lang="la" on its container. Screen readers that support it can then switch pronunciation, and automatic translation tools are less likely to try to translate the dummy text into nonsense.

Sample text for developers and testers

Developers need sample text too. Use exact characters to test a validation rule, paragraphs to fill a demo blog in a content system, and Markdown to check a renderer or an editor preview. Words up to 10,000 or characters up to 100,000 are useful for testing how an app handles a very long post, a slow search index or a text area with no height limit.

For seed data, generate a block in Plain text, then split it into the fields you need. If your sample data lives in JSON, the JSON Formatter makes it easy to check and tidy the file after you paste the text in, and the Case Converter fixes titles that need Title Case or Sentence case.

Keep test text out of production. A simple rule is to use placeholder text only in seed files, fixtures and demo accounts, and to search for lorem before every release so nothing slips through into the live product.

Testing input handling is another good use. Paste a 10,000-word block into a form to see whether the server accepts it, whether the page slows down and whether the saved result matches what was sent. Then paste a short block with HTML tags into a field that should only accept plain text, and check that the tags are shown as text or removed rather than run as code.

Lorem ipsum generator free to use, made in your browser

You can use this lorem ipsum generator free of charge, with no sign-up, no account, no daily limit and no watermark in the text. Make one sentence or a hundred paragraphs as often as you like.

All text is made in your browser with a word list that is part of the page, and the random choices come from your browser's built-in secure random number source. Nothing you generate is sent to a server, so it is just as safe to use on a work laptop as at home.

The only thing kept is your settings, saved in this browser's local storage so the page remembers your choices. Clear your browser data or use a private window and the page starts with the default of 3 medium Latin paragraphs in plain text.

The classic lorem ipsum passage is based on a Latin text that is more than two thousand years old, and the words here are shuffled at random each time. You can use the generated text in drafts, client mockups, themes, templates and other projects without asking anyone.

    Print layouts

Check columns, margins and page breaks in a flyer, menu, poster or brochure before the final text is ready.

    Presentations

Fill text boxes and bullet slides to set font sizes and spacing; use English if the audience may try to read it.

    Form and field testing

Use exact character counts to test maximum lengths, live counters and error messages.

    Email templates

Fill newsletter blocks to see how long text wraps in narrow columns and on small screens.

    Teaching and learning

Practise HTML, CSS or Markdown with ready-made paragraphs, headings and lists to style.

    Documents and reports

Build a Word or Google Docs template with headings and lists before the real report is written.

    Social posts and ads

Use exact character counts to see how a caption or ad text fits a preview before you write the real message.

    Demo content

Fill a demo shop, blog or portfolio with sample posts so screenshots and walkthroughs look complete.

    Troubleshooting: when something looks wrong

The paste shows tags like <p>

You pasted HTML tags into a place that expects text. Use Copy for Word / Docs for formatted text, or switch Format to Plain text and press Copy.

    Formatting is lost when pasting

Some apps only accept plain text, and some paste shortcuts, such as Ctrl+Shift+V, paste without formatting. Use the normal paste command, or try another editor.

    Copy does nothing

Your browser may block clipboard access in some settings. Allow clipboard access, try another browser, or select the text in the box and copy it by hand.

The word count looks high for a list

In Bullet list mode the live counter also counts the bullet or number in front of each item as a word. The items themselves are what you asked for.

The text does not start with Lorem ipsum

Tick Start with “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet” in the Text card. The option only shows when Lorem ipsum (Latin) is selected.

    Paragraph length is missing

It only shows for Paragraphs and Headings + text. Sentences, Words, Characters and Bullet list have their own fixed rules.

The bold, italic and link option is missing

It shows only when Format is HTML tags or Markdown. Plain text has nowhere to put the tags, though Copy for Word / Docs still includes them if the box was ticked before.

I asked for more than I got

Words stop at 10,000, characters at 100,000, and paragraphs, sentences, list items and sections at 200. Generate twice and join the pieces if you need more.

The page opened with odd settings

The page remembers your last choices in this browser. Pick new options, or clear the site data to go back to the defaults.

    =lorem does nothing in Word

Type it at the start of a new paragraph and press Enter, and make sure Replace text as you type is turned on in Word's AutoCorrect options.

    Headings paste as plain lines

Press Copy for Word / Docs rather than Copy. Plain text has no heading formatting, so a heading becomes an ordinary line when pasted.

The downloaded HTML file looks plain

The file holds only the tags, with no styles. That is expected; paste the code into your own page or template to see it with your design.

Tips for working with placeholder text

    Test short and long

Try the smallest and largest text a space might hold, not only a comfortable middle amount.

    Match the final language

If the real copy will be English, check the layout with English text before you sign it off.

    Use exact counts for limits

Words and Characters give exact totals, which is what you need when a design or field has a hard limit.

Keep real headings when you can

Real headings with placeholder body text show the true structure of the page much better than dummy headings.

    Search before launch

Search for lorem, ipsum and dolor in your pages, templates and files before anything goes public.

    Rename downloads

Files are saved as lorem-ipsum.txt, .html or .md; rename them so they are easy to find in a project folder.

    Pick the right format

Use HTML tags for prototypes and templates, Markdown for docs and README files, and plain text for everything else.

    Press New text for variety

Fresh shuffles stop every card in a mockup from looking the same, which makes repeated layouts easier to judge.

    Label your mockups

Add a short note such as Sample text so reviewers know the words are not final and comment on the layout instead.

    Replace it early

Swap in real copy section by section as it arrives, rather than waiting to replace everything at the end.

    What to do next

Once the placeholder text has done its job, a few other tools on FlipMyFormat help with the next steps. Paste your real draft into the Word Counter to check it against the same limits you tested, and use the Case Converter to fix headings in Title Case or Sentence case.

If you are building pages, the QR Code Generator makes a working code for a printed mockup or poster, and Image to PDF turns screenshots of your layouts into one file to send for feedback. When a document template is finished, Word to PDF gives you a version that looks the same on every device.

    Frequently asked questions

What is a lorem ipsum generator online, and do I need to install anything?

It is a web page that makes placeholder text for you on request. Nothing needs installing: this one works in any modern browser on a phone, tablet or computer, and the text is made on your own device in a moment.

Is this lorem ipsum generator free?

Yes. There is no sign-up, no account, no daily limit and no watermark. You can generate as much text as you like and use it in personal or client projects.

Can I use the lorem ipsum generator with word count to get exactly 500 words?

Yes. Choose Words, type 500 and you get exactly 500 words in one block that ends with a full stop. The live counter next to the buttons confirms the total. You can ask for anything from 1 to 10,000 words.

How does the lorem ipsum generator by character count handle spaces?

By default spaces count, so 160 characters means 160 including spaces. Tick count without spaces and only visible characters are counted, which makes the full text longer. Either way the text ends with a full stop.

What does the lorem ipsum generator with HTML tags output?

Paragraphs in p tags, headings in h2 tags, and lists in ul or ol with li items. Tick Add bold, italic and a link to add strong, em and a link to # inside longer paragraphs. The output is a fragment ready to paste into a page or template.

Can the lorem ipsum generator with headings make a full article layout?

Yes. Choose Headings + text and set how many sections you want, up to 200. Each section has a short heading and one paragraph, and Paragraph length controls how long each paragraph is.

Is there a lorem ipsum generator with bullet points?

Yes, choose Bullet list. Each item is about 3 to 8 words with no full stop, and you can tick numbered to get a numbered list instead. HTML tags, Markdown and Copy for Word / Docs all give a proper list.

Can I get a lorem ipsum generator in English instead of Latin?

Yes. In the Text card choose English for readable sample copy made from shuffled English words. It is useful for user tests and client reviews where Latin might confuse people. All the other options work the same way.

What makes this a handy lorem ipsum generator for web designers?

It covers the pieces a layout needs: paragraphs, exact words for cards, exact characters for fields, headings for long pages and lists for feature grids. HTML tags and Markdown output save you writing markup, and your settings are remembered for next time.

Can I use this as a lorem ipsum generator for Word documents?

Yes. Press Copy for Word / Docs and paste into Word, and paragraphs, headings and lists arrive formatted. Word also has its own shortcut, =lorem(3,5), which inserts 3 paragraphs of 5 sentences each.

    What does lorem ipsum mean?

On its own, nothing exact. It is a scrambled piece of Latin from Cicero's De finibus bonorum et malorum, written in 45 BC. The original phrase dolorem ipsum means pain itself, but the dummy text has been cut and mixed so much that it no longer reads as proper Latin.

Why do designers use Latin dummy text?

Because people cannot read it, they look at the typeface, spacing and layout instead of the words. It also has a natural mix of short and long words, so it fills space much like real writing does.

Can I turn off the Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet opening?

Yes. In the Text card untick Start with “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet” and the text starts with random Latin words. The option is only shown when Latin text is selected.

How long are short, medium and long paragraphs?

Short paragraphs have 2 to 3 sentences, medium have 4 to 6 and long have 7 to 10. Each sentence has roughly 6 to 14 words, so the exact length changes each time you press New text.

How do I get different text with the same settings?

Press New text. The words are shuffled again while the unit, number, text and format stay as they are. Changing any setting also makes new text.

Can I download the text as a file?

Yes. Press Download to save lorem-ipsum.txt, lorem-ipsum.html or lorem-ipsum.md, depending on the format you chose. The HTML file holds the tags only, without a full page around them.

Does Copy for Word / Docs work in Google Docs and email?

In most cases, yes. It copies formatted text, so Google Docs, Word, many email editors and rich text boxes show real paragraphs, headings and lists. If an app only accepts plain text, it gets the plain version instead.

Is the text I generate sent anywhere?

No. Everything is made in your browser from a word list that is part of the page. Only your settings are saved, in this browser's local storage, so the page remembers your last choices.

How much text can I make at once?

Up to 10,000 words, up to 100,000 characters, or up to 200 paragraphs, sentences, list items or sections. If you need more, generate twice and join the two pieces.

Should I use lorem ipsum on a live website?

No. Placeholder text is meant for drafts, mockups and templates. On a live site it looks unfinished to visitors, so search for lorem and ipsum before you publish and replace any leftovers with real content.

Why does the word count look high for a bullet list?

In Bullet list mode the live counter also counts the bullet or number in front of each item as a word. The items are what you asked for, so subtract one per item when you check the total.
